Understanding Bipolar Disorder (World Bipolar Day)

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes noticeable shifts in a person’s mood, energy, activity levels, and ability to function. It’s not just feeling “happy” or “sad”—it’s a cycle of emotional extremes that can affect daily life, relationships, and self-perception.

What actually happens?

Think of it like a mind that sometimes rises too high and sometimes falls too low—not by choice, but by biology, psychology, and life experiences intertwining.

Manic / Hypomanic Phase (the “high”)
• Extremely elevated or irritable mood
• Increased energy, less need for sleep
• Rapid thoughts, fast speech
• Impulsivity (spending, decisions, risk-taking)
• Feeling unusually confident or “on top of the world”

(Hypomania is a milder version of mania)

Depressive Phase (the “low”)
• Persistent sadness or emptiness
• Loss of interest in activities
• Fatigue, low energy
• Changes in sleep and appetite
• Difficulty concentrating
• Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness

⚖️ Types of Bipolar Disorder
• Bipolar I: Severe manic episodes (often with depressive episodes)
• Bipolar II: Hypomania + major depression
• Cyclothymia: Milder but chronic mood fluctuations

Why awareness matters

Because bipolar disorder is often misunderstood as “just mood swings,” people living with it face stigma instead of support. But here’s the truth:
• It is treatable and manageable
• With therapy, medication, and support, individuals can live stable, meaningful lives
• Early intervention makes a huge difference

A gentle truth to hold onto

Some minds don’t just feel they amplify.
And those minds don’t need to be silenced…
they need to be understood, supported, and held with care.
