Punching Bag - The Latest Entry in Fitness
‘Bag Punching’ has been extensively patronized by boxers and martial artists since the time these two sports were innovated, although the great thing about this, it is not just for boxers, anyone who wants to get fit and shed down that extra baggage can also try this type of fitness training.
Bag-punching improves power delivery of punches, kicks and strikes, focus and aim, speed and foot-work, coordination and timing, knuckles-wrist-elbow-shoulder-neck conditioning, muscle memory, and of course, building a super anaerobic power and stamina. Make no mistake; Vigorous punching and kicking the bag will also strengthen your core (Valsalva maneuver) more than, doing 1000s of crunches – Because, each time you hit out at that bag with full intensity you contract your core (abdomen) on each count. For example, a short 30 seconds vigorous punching can deliver more than hundred punches (see the videos) – Meaning, more than 100 abdominal contractions. Now, just imagine: A three minute vigorous punching the bag can bring about more than 600 strikes…
Today’s fitness centers have put up punching bags in their offices to offer their clients this unique option, albeit – more, as a tool to burn calories and shed that extra fat rather than training for combat… just the same way, Cardio Kickboxing has taken off as a fitness workout more than a battle-field-karate-session.
All this and much more is fine as it appears, but bag punching and Kickboxing is best learnt and practiced from a trained and experienced instructor in this field, otherwise, injuries of the skin, knuckles, wrist (carpel tunnel syndrome), elbow (tennis elbow), shoulder (rotator cuff), neck and back (compression), etc can occur due to improper punching and kicking technique… and, the fatal ones like: tachycardia, reflex bradycardia can bring about cardiac arrest in the vulnerable (beginners, overweight, above 40 with coronary history) due to this Valsalva Maneuver effect caused by intensive punching and kicking. Beware!
