Hi everyone. I'm starting a series on simple tips that help first time mothers to breastfeed. I'm beginning with 'attachment to the breast' . One of common observations I make at the clinic is that babies are feeding at the breast, often continuously, but continue to be irritable and not gain weight. This is usually because of the improper attachment.

If the baby is not attached properly to the breast, the suckling becomes ineffective, and the baby does not extract milk from the breast. So the child continues to be hungry and irritable.

When the baby is properly attached, the whole ni**le and a large part of the ar**la is inside the baby's mouth. The ni**le touches the soft palate (not the hard palate), and hence does not become sore and painful.

To learn more about attachment, please watch the videos '4 signs of good attachment' and 'Proper latching' in the Videos section of my website www.drnaveenkini.com. Link in Bio.

Children are spending more time indoors, missing out on the incredible benefits of outdoor play and exercise, particularly bone and muscle growth, brain development, building of immunity, learning life skills and good quality sleep.

The WHO has set Guidelines for physical activity in children:
* Children under 5 years: must be active most of the day.
* Children between ages 6-17 years: At least 60 mins of moderate to intense physical activity (walking, cycling, skating) daily; in addition to 3 days of vigorous physical activity (running swimming, dance, badminton, skipping) in a week, preferably daily.
* Strengthening and balance: Include exercises like squats, lunges, and yoga.

So get your kids off the couch and into the sunshine. They'll be healthier and happier!

To learn more about the importance of exercise in children, read my blog on the same topic on my website. Link available in the bio.

Here are some excerpts from a talk that I gave on 24th Nov 2021, as a part of the Child and Adolescent Health Care Week, with the theme "Healthy Child, Nation's Pride". the webinar was arranged jointly by the Indian Medical Association, Karnataka State Branch and the Bangalore Adolescent Health Academy.

As the talk was to doctors, there may be a few technical terms used in this talk. But since there is a clear message in this for all parents, I am uploading a part of the talk here. Specifically, the part on the importance of diet, physical activity and sleep in a child's health.

Here are some details on the causes, management and prevention of diarrhoea in the 🏡 setting.

The idea was initially floated as us doctors (Dr Satish Kini, Dr Bopanna and myself) providing some tips on first aid to the elders and others among our family and friends, to help them cope with the possibility of having to deal with emergencies at home. We then found that there was a lot of information gathered during these sessions which will be helpful to most people, and hence decided to edit the videos of the zoom session, and put it out as smaller sessions.

This is the first one of the series, dealing management of diarrhoea.

The second wave of COVID 19 has been particularly brutal in our country, and I am seeing entire families getting affected this time. This has lead to a lot of confusion and panic, and also to misinformation and scare-mongering on social media. Here are some answers to common concerns that most people have.
