Which is the brain scan of choice in head injury? Is it CT brain or MRI brain scan?
A blow to the head can be scary. There can be a concussion, bleeding on or inside the brain, or cracks to the skull bone.
The doctor may order a brain scan to make sure you do not have a fractured skull or a serious brain.
An ideal scan to look for brain damage in head injury should fulfill these parameters
1 . Scan should be completed in short time. Because head injured individuals are restless & there may be loos of blood resulting in low blood pressure. “Ct scan can be performed within 2 minutes, while MRI brain scan will take 30 minutes to an hour.”
2. Scan should detect bleeding in the brain as well as fracture of skull bone. “CT Sscan has higher sensitivity kn detecting blood & fractures than MRI”
3. Scan should be cheaper. “CT scan is few thousand Rupees cheaper than MRI.”
4. Scan should be available at nearest hospital. As installation of MRI is expensive & occupies large area , “MRI facility is not available at all hospitals.”
5. Head injured patients need continuous monitoring, blood transfusion & injectable medicine while performing scans. Most of these monitors & injectable are not compatible within high magnetic fields of MRI. But for CT all monitors, oxygen cylinders & medicine dispensing machineries are compatible.
“Therfore CT scan brain is the modality of choice in head injured patient over MRI scan.”
