The month of Karkkataka, beginning in mid-June marks a particularly wet season in Karnataka, Kerala and southwest India. This month heralds the Varṣā ṛtu, or the rainy season, as described in Ayurvedic texts. Ayurveda regards human beings as integral parts of the nature they inhabit, and thus the seasons influence their physiology. The rainy season, arriving immediately after the intensely hot Indian summer that scorches the land and the organisms dry, further complicates the body’s physiology. The body’s channels become inundated with the excessive moisture in the climate, causing the digestive fire (Agni) to weaken. This results in the Vāta becoming vitiated, leading to various disorders in the body, including joint pains and inflammation. During this challenging season, Ayurveda prescribes treatments to rebalance the Vāta. Traditionally, this period is marked by inactivity in agrarian Kerala. With the sowing completed, men and women retreat to the comfortable, well-lit inner courtyards of their tharavadu for some well-deserved sessions of self-care. Martial warriors and artists of various traditional dance forms seek recovery and enhanced flexibility through deep tissue massages administered by the skilled hands and feet of expert masseurs. Both old and young find nourishment in gruels prepared with native herbs and spices. While the young revel in the exciting stories of Ramayana sung to them every evening by elders at home, the older folk find solace in the glittering gems of Indian philosophy peppered in these stories.

Sukrutham is a bustling place during these times. In addition to the numerous patients seeking traditional and authentic Panchakarma treatments for their ailments, we have also gladly welcomed those in search of rejuvenation and relaxation during the rains. We are pleased to observe that the number of individuals pursuing time-tested and sustainable health solutions is increasing daily. A significant percentage of those seeking Karkkataka cikitsa at our centres in Calicut, Bangalore, and Chennai are young professionals. They are well-educated and consequently make wise lifestyle choices. Most of these young professionals work across global time zones and geographies and therefore recognize the value and importance of timely rest and recovery. In metros like Bangalore and Chennai, our service hours extend further for certain specific treatments, wherever tradition and Shastra allow that freedom. Curated packages designed for wellness, beauty, relaxation, and detox help easier decisions and deliver excellent value. Here at Sukrutham we serve you and Ayurveda well.

World Health Day 2025

This year’s World Health Day has ‘Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures’ as its central theme, focusing on maternal and newborn health. Ayurveda is probably the world’s first medical system that systematically documented a comprehensive maternal and newborn care plan. Classical texts of ayurveda written more than two millennia ago present a systematic month-wise diet and activity plan for aspiring mothers to help them prepare physically and mentally for the most important period of their lives. These diets are designed to help a pregnant woman achieve a healthy weight gain taking care of the nutritional demands of the baby growing in her womb, prevent anaemia and to make her musculoskeletal system supple and string to withstand the challenges of labour.

Post delivery, Ayurveda’s focus is to help young mothers heal and repair injuries, stimulate breast milk production and prevent any future muscle and joint pains. A diet focusing on millets, healthy and easily digestible proteins and other essential nutrients is the hallmark of an Ayurvedic post-delivery diet. This helps young mothers to achieve a healthy body weight reduction without sacrificing on the nutritional needs of their young ones. Kerala’s Ayurvedic community has kept this age old tradition alive and most women there, even today undergo a systematic Ayurvedic post-natal care that includes special massages, supportive bandages, and medicines to heal labour injuries and stimulate milk production.

For the last four decades, Sukrutham has kept alive these age old practices and helped the new generation of young mothers to rediscover the ancient wisdom of their country at our centres across South India. On this year’s World Health Day, Sukrutham wishes you a very healthy and peaceful year ahead.
