The month of Karkkataka, beginning in mid-June marks a particularly wet season in Karnataka, Kerala and southwest India. This month heralds the Varṣā ṛtu, or the rainy season, as described in Ayurvedic texts. Ayurveda regards human beings as integral parts of the nature they inhabit, and thus the seasons influence their physiology. The rainy season, arriving immediately after the intensely hot Indian summer that scorches the land and the organisms dry, further complicates the body’s physiology. The body’s channels become inundated with the excessive moisture in the climate, causing the digestive fire (Agni) to weaken. This results in the Vāta becoming vitiated, leading to various disorders in the body, including joint pains and inflammation. During this challenging season, Ayurveda prescribes treatments to rebalance the Vāta. Traditionally, this period is marked by inactivity in agrarian Kerala. With the sowing completed, men and women retreat to the comfortable, well-lit inner courtyards of their tharavadu for some well-deserved sessions of self-care. Martial warriors and artists of various traditional dance forms seek recovery and enhanced flexibility through deep tissue massages administered by the skilled hands and feet of expert masseurs. Both old and young find nourishment in gruels prepared with native herbs and spices. While the young revel in the exciting stories of Ramayana sung to them every evening by elders at home, the older folk find solace in the glittering gems of Indian philosophy peppered in these stories.
