Hank Nunn Institute

Hank Nunn Institute Hank Nunn Institute is a non-profit mental health organization. We are currently present in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Jaipur. Named after Fr.

Our community-based approach to psychotherapy is centered on access, empathy, and respect for the service user. Hank Nunn Institute is a not-for-profit registered charitable trust located in Bangalore, India. Hank Nunn S.J., a Canadian Jesuit, who spent 35 years of his life dedicated towards working with those diagnosed with chronic psychiatric disorders. HNI was founded by Anando Chatterji and Sh

ama Parkhe on 8th July 2014. We are a group of highly passionate individuals who are making efforts to bring awareness and transform the therapeutic care in Mental Health. by making it accessible and affordable through long and short term programs. These programs include Individual and Group psychotherapy, and Outreach Counselling. Our focus area is to develop a service for those with personality disorder. Due to the lack of awareness and existing stigma around mental health, those with personality disorder go unnoticed under the justification that they don't have a "real psychological problem." Our efforts are to develop carefully designed treatment, awareness, and training programs to meet this challenge experienced by individuals with personality disorder. Moreover, today there is a dire need to address the massive gap between those who need services and those providing them. The Institute intends to bridge this gap by providing various mental health services for persons with severe mental illnesses. HNI also intends to provide an opportunity for the community to be involved at various levels in supporting the recovery process. This approach is based on the Therapeutic Community (TC) methodology, where every activity is planned and has a healing intention within a structured environment. Our Vision: To make mental health a priority in every community

Our mission: To design a personality disorder service in the country which is accessible, affordable and culturally congruent

This is a weekly reflective space for those who identify as women to come together to share their own experiences and hear others.

Making sense and meaning of our experiences is easier said than done. But it is also easier when done in tandem with support and community. The hope behind this space is to find and create this by sharing our thoughts, reflections, feelings, rage, differences and dichotomies with one another.

Groups in Life, Life in Groups
Led by Mohit Sharma

Picking up from the last lecture where we touched on the relationship between individual and group psychotherapy, this month we are thinking about the individual in the group. Rather than think only of membership in a therapy group which can quickly become theoretical and abstract, we consider groups in life and how our membership in different groups - whether voluntary or as unwitting participants - permeates us and shapes what we refer to as an individual. This, hopefully, helps us to understand something about the life that one witnesses in groups, whether within families, workspaces and organizations, the larger society, culture and the microcosm that is the therapy group.

A new group space slated to begin mid-2023 — swipe through for more information

Raabta means ‘connection’, ‘relation’, or ‘bond’. In holding this space, the facilitator hopes that those who join find meaning and connection in acknowledging shared experiences, but also the differences within the group. Those interested in joining can email the facilitator (hena@hanknunninstitute.org) or the coordinator (coordinator@hanknunninstitute.org) for more info.

Image Description:
A section of artwork titled "Social Networking" by Shelby McQuilkin (2014) as the background image of the post — it depicts blurry shapes of people dressed in yellow, ochre and green colors against a teal backdrop.

A white text box on the lower three quarters of the image contains the following: HNI logo, Raabta (group name). Below is text in black, stating the timing: "Thursdays, starting mid-2023 on Zoom."

This is followed by text in blue, that says, "This weekly online group is for Indian Muslim Women to express their thoughts and feelings about their lives, identities, and the contexts in which they find themselves. By talking about shared experiences and also paying attention to the ways in which we differ, we will hopefully build and share meaningful connections. The facilitator will meet those interested for therapeutic conversations, to clarify doubts and concerns about joining the experiential group. The group will start when 4-5 members are confirmed — final group size is expected to be 8-10 members."

Below this, is text in black, stating, “Hena Faqurudheen (she/they) is a psychotherapist at Hank Nunn Institute (HNI) and a group analyst-in-training. In the mental health field since 2009, their work has focused on the intersections of trauma, social justice, and relationships to understand how we together can build an equitably inclusive society. Cost of sessions: Sliding scale (income-based) fee structure. Contact: hena@hanknunninstitute.org.”

Journeying is back from a short break! Moving away from places and faces, or experiencing a shift in ourselves and in relationships— there are so many kinds of transitions we experience as we go through life. Join us as we reflect on what transitions bring up for us and what it means to us, as individuals and as a community.

After a 5 year-long hiatus, we were thrilled to bring LLEs back! It was exactly a month ago that we met to co-create a transient therapeutic community nestled in the middle of a forest in Goa. Here is a sneak peak into all that was felt and experienced. Being so close to nature allowed members to push through inhibitions and challenge boundaries, both physical and emotional. The weekend saw the community move through quiet contemplation, tentative interjections, and authentic interactions. In the midst of the wilderness, the community was forced to confront ideas surrounding responsibility, agency, and ownership, alongside developing a sense of belonging, both in small and large groups. In just a short amount of time, members experienced an interplay of different power dynamics. Any community experience is incomplete without play, laughter, yummy food, and joy - and there was plenty of it to go around in this LLE!

As we left, a lot was said and felt but also left unspoken. The hope is we will continue to ponder, question, process, and understand both the spoken and the unspoken as we find reflections of these experiences in our everyday lives.

We look forward to co-creating more such communities in the coming year. Living Learning Experience brings together Therapeutic Community (TC) and Group Analytic (GA) approaches to co-produce learnings that encourage conscious living in groups, families, and communities.

Watch this space to stay updated! Come say hello if you would like to co-create bespoke LLEs for your community.
