We are delighted to share the launch of the Karunashraya MAHE Centre of Excellence ( ) for Advance Care Planning ( ) — a collaborative initiative between Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) through Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and Bangalore Hospice Trust (BHT).

The CoE aims to address the growing challenges of chronic and life-limiting conditions in India by promoting structured, patient-centred approaches that help individuals reflect on their values, express preferences, appoint surrogates, and document choices for future care.

The Centre will work towards integrating ACP into oncology, nephrology, ICU/critical care, geriatrics, palliative care, and community care, while also serving as a hub for training, education, and research to strengthen evidence-based and compassionate healthcare delivery in India.

The CoE was inaugurated on October 7, 2025, by Dr. H. S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, in the presence of Dr. Sharath Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor (Health Sciences), Dr. Naveen Salins, Professor of Palliative Medicine, Dr. Nagesh Simha, Medical Director, Karunashraya, and other dignitaries.

Together, we take another step toward a future where every individual’s voice and values are central to their care journey.

Today, we join millions across the globe in reaffirming a simple yet powerful truth — every person deserves comfort, dignity, and compassion at every stage of life.

At Karunashraya, we see this promise unfold everyday — through the touch of a doctor and nurse easing pain, a counselor offering solace, a volunteer holding space for silence, and families finding strength in care that sees the person beyond the illness.

Palliative care is not a privilege — it is a human right.
As we mark this day, let us continue to work towards a world where no one faces the end of life without care, comfort, and compassion.

Together, let’s keep the promise — for every life, and every journey.

We were deeply honored to be invited by Tapasya Palliative Hospice Care Centre, Mangalore, where our Managing Trustee, Mr. Gurmeet Randhawa, along with our CEO, Mr. Mathew George Chandy visited the centre.

It is heartening to see how our collective community of palliative and hospice care providers is steadily growing. When Karunashraya began its journey nearly 30 years ago, end-of-life care was a concept rarely spoken of in India. Today, we are witnessing a meaningful shift—more organizations are stepping forward, creating spaces of dignity, compassion, and awareness for those facing life’s most difficult stage.

Hospice and palliative care are no longer just services—they are movements of humanity, reshaping the way society embraces the final journey of life.

We extend our gratitude to the management and staff of Tapasya Palliative Hospice Care Centre for their warm hospitality and wish them the very best in carrying forward this mission of care. Together, we continue to build a future where every life is honored, and every ending is met with dignity.
