Visit of Vice Chancellor, Thiruvalluvar University to NIUM, Bengaluru

Prof. Dr. T. Arumugam, an eminent academician and the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University, visited the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru on 9th July 2025.
He was warmly received by Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, along with senior faculty members of the institute. During his visit, Prof. Arumugam visited various key facilities of the institute, including the Hospital, Regimenal Therapy Unit, Maternity Ward, Operation Theater, Cosmetology Unit, Hammam, Pharmacy, Academic Block, and the Central Library.
The Vice Chancellor engaged in meaningful discussions with the Director and senior faculty, exploring potential areas of academic and research collaboration, with a shared vision to promote innovation and development in the field of Unani medicine.
He expressed his deep appreciation for the remarkable progress NIUM has made in both research and patient care, and was highly impressed by the academic vibrancy and the serene, research-conducive environment of the Institute.

NABH Surveillance Assessment Successfully Conducted at NIUM

The National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru, an NABH - Accredited hospital, underwent its mid-term NABH surveillance assessment, started on 25th June and concluded on 26th June 2025.
The assessment was conducted by Principal Assessor Mr. P. P. Rajan and Assessor Dr. Pradnya Kapse. The team reviewed key documents, evaluated the implementation of SOPs, inspected upgraded facilities, and assessed overall compliance with NABH standards.
The visit concluded with a closing meeting, where valuable feedback and quality improvement suggestions were shared. Dr. Mohd Aazam, Clinical Registrar and NABH Coordinator, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of NIUM.
It is worth mentioning that the credit for establishing and maintaining NABH accreditation at NIUM—from the first certification to the present—goes to Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, the then DMS of NIUM Hospital and currently serving as Director, NIUM.

NIUM organized Guest Lecture on Innovation & Entrepreneurship in AYUSH.

The Research Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell (RIEDC) and Department of Ilmul Saidla NIUM, Bangalore organized a guest lecture on 23.06.2025 on the topic "Diffusion of Innovation and Transfer of Technology including Charms of Entrepreneurship, Institutional Support, and Government Schemes for AYUSH Entrepreneurs."

Dr. Shreekant Sharma, Director, School of Entrepreneurship and Extension, National Institute for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (NI-MSME), Hyderabad delivered a valuable lecture and highlighted key aspects of innovation diffusion, technology transfer, and entrepreneurial opportunities in AYUSH, along with institutional and governmental support for startups.

In celebration of the 11th International Day of Yoga, the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru, hosted a dynamic seminar that delved into the transformative power of yoga in today’s health-conscious world.

The session commenced with a warm welcome address by Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, who emphasized the growing global recognition of yoga as an instrument of preventive and promotive health. He highlighted yoga’s ability to integrate body, mind, and spirit, aligning perfectly with the vision of holistic well-being in traditional systems like Unani Medicine.

The seminar featured two insightful talks by distinguished speakers.
Dr. Jinsey Sundaram, Associate Professor at S-VYASA Yoga University, spoke on “The Role of Health Professionals in the Vision of One Earth, One Health.” She emphasized the need for collaboration between traditional and modern healthcare systems to achieve sustainable, holistic wellness on a global scale.

Dr. Vinay Siddaiah, Technology Convener of the Indian Yoga Association (Karnataka Chapter), presented on “Pranayama – A Tool for Physical, Mental, and Emotional Well-being.” His engaging talk highlighted breathwork as a powerful, accessible practice for managing stress, improving focus, and enhancing overall mental health.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Abdul Mobeen, Nodal Officer for Yoga Activities at NIUM, Bengaluru. The National Institute of Unani Medicine, Ghaziabad, in collaboration with the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, New Delhi, celebrated the 11th International Yoga Day with great enthusiasm through the event ‘Yog Sangam’ under the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.” Around 1200 participants, including students, teachers, and principals from various institutions, actively took part in the mass yoga demonstration led by experts from MDNIY. The event was graced by Shri D.K. Gupta, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Ghaziabad, who highlighted yoga’s significance in promoting harmony and resilience. The National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, marked the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) with a magnificent “Yoga Sangam 2025” on 21st June at the NIUM cricket ground.

Under the inspiring leadership of Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, whose unwavering dedication to promoting traditional wellness systems was central to the event’s success, the celebration unfolded with great energy and purpose.

Embracing the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” the event championed wellness, unity, and environmental harmony. Over 1000 enthusiastic participants—including students, faculty, healthcare professionals, and community members—came together for a powerful mass yoga session, featuring the Common Yoga Protocol, followed by soothing breathing exercises and guided meditation.

Before the yoga session, attendees were graced with a motivating address by Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. His words, filled with wisdom, emphasized yoga’s transformative power in fostering global peace, health, and sustainability, deeply inspiring everyone to embrace yoga as a universal tool for well-being.

The National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), in collaboration with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), successfully hosted a grand yoga event on March 18th 2025, at the NIUM cricket ground, marking the 95th day of the 100-day Yogotsav Countdown to International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025. With the enthusiastic participation of 600+ individuals, the event showcased the transformative power of yoga in promoting holistic well-being. Under the visionary leadership of Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, and the dedicated coordination of Dr. M.DA Bhat, Nodal Officer, IDY-2025, the program was a remarkable success. The contributions of Prof. G. Sofi, Prof. A.N. Ansari, Dr. Wasim Ahmed, Shri Nanda Kishore and other were invaluable in organizing the event.
