National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru, officials, faculty members, and P.G Scholars took part in the Govt. of India’s awareness program “Nasha Mukt Bharat” - Pledge Against Drug Abuse. The pledge was first administered by Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director of NIUM, and was repeated by all participants with a firm commitment to support a drug-free society.
Prof. A.M.K. Sherwani is the coordinator of this programme, with Dr. Mohd Asjad Khan, Clinical Registrar and Dr. Ilyas Patel (Ph.D. Scholar) assisting in its smooth ex*****on. The campaign “Nasha Mukt Bharat” will continue at NIUM until 31st August 2025 through awareness activities among students, staff, and patients.
Drug abuse has emerged as a serious public health concern, affecting the physical, mental, and social well-being of individuals. It not only hampers academic and professional growth but also leads to family and societal distress. Through this pledge, NIUM reaffirms its responsibility to educate the community, spread awareness, and contribute to building a healthier, drug-free nation.

NIUM Bengaluru Hosts Bilingual Essay Writing Competition under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat

The National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru organized a bilingual (English and Hindi) essay writing competition on 20th August at NIUM Bengaluru under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) initiative. The event was on the theme “Unani Medicine and Its Emerging Role in the Hilly Regions of India: A Focus on Uttarakhand.” The programme was conducted under the patronage of Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, and was coordinated by Dr. Sadique Ali, Nodal Officer, EBSB, with overall vigilance and support from Dr. Tasfiya Hakeem Ansari. The competition highlighted the growing relevance of Unani medicine in addressing health challenges specific to hilly terrains of Uttrakhand and aimed to encourage students to explore the integration of traditional healthcare systems in diverse ecological regions.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at NIUM, Bengaluru

The National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru observing the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” initiated by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India from 1st August -31st August 2025. As part of the campaign, a public awareness program was organized at the OPD Block of NIUM Hospital in collaboration with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
The AA fellowship sensitized the public about the hazards of alcohol consumption and guided them on de-addiction, behavioural change, and healthy lifestyle practices. The program was coordinated by Prof. Arish Mohammad Khan Sherwani (NMBA Coordinator), with active participation from Dr. Asjad Khan, Clinical Registrar and Dr. Md. Iliyas Patel, PhD scholars, at NIUM Bengaluru. IEC material was also distributed among OPD patients to spread awareness on the harmful effects of alcohol.
Concluding the campaign, it was highlighted that under the visionary leadership of Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, the Institute not only excels in education and healthcare but also takes proactive steps in social responsibility and public health awareness. His mission-driven guidance ensures that NIUM continues to serve as a centre of excellence and a trusted contributor to building a Healthy & Nasha-Mukt Bharat.

Renewal of MoU between Thiruvalluvar University and NIUM

On 11th August 2025, at the office of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. T. Arumugam, Thiruvalluvar University, Serkkadu, Vellore, the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India renewed its MoU with the University.
Since assuming charge as Director, Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam has placed strong emphasis on promoting and strengthening the Unani system of medicine through strategic collaborations with premier academic and research institutions. His vision focuses on scientific validation, wider dissemination, and global promotion of Unani medicine, alongside introducing innovative academic programs to integrate traditional healing with modern health sciences
As part of the renewed collaboration, two new academic programs will be launched from the 2025–26 session. The Diploma in Unani Pharmacy (DUP) is a comprehensive two-year program comprising 18 months of coursework and six months of clinical/field posting, designed to equip students with both theoretical and practical expertise in Unani pharmaceutical sciences. The Postgraduate Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics is a one-year course that bridges Unani principles with contemporary nutrition and dietetics to promote holistic health. Efforts of Dr Hamid Uddin and Dr Malik Itrat are worthy to mention who framed course modules.
On this occasion, Prof. Ghulamuddin Sofi, Director (In-charge), NIUM, Prof. Abid Ali Ansari and Dr. Wasim Ahmed were present at the venue, reaffirming the institute’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and public health advancement.

Mission Director, National Ayush Mission Visits NIUM Ghaziabad: Acknowledges Excellence in Unani Healthcare
The National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Ghaziabad, had the honour of welcoming Ms. Nisha Anant, IAS, Mission Director of the National Ayush Mission, Government of Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, August 8, 2025.
During her visit, Ms. Anant toured various key departments of the institute, including the Outpatient Department (OPD), Inpatient Department (IPD), Regimenal Therapy Unit, Operation Theatre, and the Maternity Wing. Accompanied by her team, she observed the facilities first-hand, interacted with the staff, and gained insights into the institute’s integrated approach to patient care.
In the Regimenal Therapy Unit, Ms. Anant was introduced to a range of traditional Unani therapies such as cupping (Hijama), leech therapy, steam bath, spinal bath, and sitz bath. She expressed keen interest in understanding how these time-tested treatments are effectively integrated with modern medical practices to deliver holistic healthcare.
Ms. Anant also engaged with patients admitted at the hospital, listening to their experiences and feedback regarding treatment and overall care. The patients conveyed their satisfaction with the personalized attention and quality medical services provided by the institute’s doctors and nursing staff.
Impressed by the state-of-the-art infrastructure, high standards of cleanliness, and the quality of care, Ms. Anant lauded the leadership of Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director of NIUM. She commended his vision, dedication, and strategic supervision, which have been instrumental in advancing the institute’s facilities while preserving the essence of the traditional Unani system. Under his leadership, NIUM has achieved significant progress in infrastructure development, patient care, and academic excellence.
Ms. Anant’s visit served as a strong source of encouragement for the NIUM team, reaffirming the institute’s commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and the promotion of Unani medicine.

WHO-IRCH Delegation Visits NIUM, Ghaziabad During PCIM&H Organized Workshop

The Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) organized WHO-IRCH Workshops (WG 1 & 3) in which the World Health Organization delegation visited the National Institute of Unani Medicine, Ghaziabad.
The delegation included representatives from 16 countries viz Bhutan, Brunei, Cuba, Ghana, Indonesia, India, Iran, Japan, Nepal, Paraguay, Poland, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. They were accompanied by Dr. Kim Sungchol, Unit Head, TCI, WHO and Chairperson, WHO-IRCH; Dr. Pradeep Kumar Dua, Technical Officer, TCI Unit, WHO; Dr. Raghu Arackal, DDG, Ayush; and Dr. Raman Mohan Singh, Director, PCIM&H.
Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, Ghaziabad, welcomed the delegation. The team toured the Hospital Block, witnessing the registration process, OPD services, Unani medicine distribution, and various regimenal therapies. The Director accompanied the delegation to witness the institute facilities and functioning and the documentation of various procedures.
A detailed presentation by Prof. Alam highlighted the holistic approach of the Unani system, covering dietotherapy, regimenal therapy, pharmacotherapy, and surgery. He emphasized the Government of India's commitment to promoting Unani medicine and the Institute’s academic contributions through its postgraduate programs.
The delegation appreciated the well-maintained facilities and the professionalism of NIUM. The visit concluded on a positive and encouraging note, with Dr. Kim Sungchol emphasizing of promoting the Unani system of medicine at the global level, with its holistic and patient-centered approach for wider recognition.

One-Day Skill Enhancement Workshop Held at NIUM, Ghaziabad
The National Institute of Unani Medicine, Ghaziabad, in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson MedTech, organized a One-Day Comprehensive Skill Enhancement Hands-on Workshop on 6th August 2025. The workshop focused on enhancing the clinical and surgical skills of PG Scholars and faculty from Dept. of Ilmul Jarahat and Qabalat wa Niswan.
It was inaugurated by Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, and also delivered the welcome address. Participants received hands-on training using the Tübingen Model, simulating laparoscopic procedures in a high-fidelity environment.
Sessions included Didactic Training and a Session on Energy (SOE) on the safe use of surgical energy devices. The workshop aligned with international standards of surgical care, combining traditional Unani knowledge with modern techniques. This initiative strengthened intraoperative decision-making and promoted safe, effective surgical practices. Prof. Alam’s vision continues to bridge Unani medicine with modern healthcare innovations.

Visit of Vice Chancellor, Thiruvalluvar University to NIUM, Bengaluru

Prof. Dr. T. Arumugam, an eminent academician and the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University, visited the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru on 9th July 2025.
He was warmly received by Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, along with senior faculty members of the institute. During his visit, Prof. Arumugam visited various key facilities of the institute, including the Hospital, Regimenal Therapy Unit, Maternity Ward, Operation Theater, Cosmetology Unit, Hammam, Pharmacy, Academic Block, and the Central Library.
The Vice Chancellor engaged in meaningful discussions with the Director and senior faculty, exploring potential areas of academic and research collaboration, with a shared vision to promote innovation and development in the field of Unani medicine.
He expressed his deep appreciation for the remarkable progress NIUM has made in both research and patient care, and was highly impressed by the academic vibrancy and the serene, research-conducive environment of the Institute.

NABH Surveillance Assessment Successfully Conducted at NIUM

The National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bengaluru, an NABH - Accredited hospital, underwent its mid-term NABH surveillance assessment, started on 25th June and concluded on 26th June 2025.
The assessment was conducted by Principal Assessor Mr. P. P. Rajan and Assessor Dr. Pradnya Kapse. The team reviewed key documents, evaluated the implementation of SOPs, inspected upgraded facilities, and assessed overall compliance with NABH standards.
The visit concluded with a closing meeting, where valuable feedback and quality improvement suggestions were shared. Dr. Mohd Aazam, Clinical Registrar and NABH Coordinator, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of NIUM.
It is worth mentioning that the credit for establishing and maintaining NABH accreditation at NIUM—from the first certification to the present—goes to Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, the then DMS of NIUM Hospital and currently serving as Director, NIUM.

The National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), in collaboration with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), successfully hosted a grand yoga event on March 18th 2025, at the NIUM cricket ground, marking the 95th day of the 100-day Yogotsav Countdown to International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025. With the enthusiastic participation of 600+ individuals, the event showcased the transformative power of yoga in promoting holistic well-being. Under the visionary leadership of Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM, and the dedicated coordination of Dr. M.DA Bhat, Nodal Officer, IDY-2025, the program was a remarkable success. The contributions of Prof. G. Sofi, Prof. A.N. Ansari, Dr. Wasim Ahmed, Shri Nanda Kishore and other were invaluable in organizing the event. The reassessment of NABH accreditation was successfully completed in 2024, and a certificate presentation ceremony was held on the occasion of Unani Day 2025.
