Visit of Second WHO Global Summit Delegates to NIUM, Ghaziabad
Ministry of Ayush, in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO), is hosting the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine in New Delhi from 17th to 19th December, 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The Summit is being held under the theme “Restoring Balance: The Science and Practice of Health and Well-being”. The Summit is witnessing participation of high-level dignitaries from WHO Member States, officials of international organizations, and eminent experts from across the globe. Guided by the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025-2034, the discussions will focus on how traditional medicine systems can contribute meaningfully to people-centred healthcare and planetary well-being. The deliberations will highlight emerging scientific evidence, innovations and policy pathways that support the safe, effective and ethical integration of Traditional Medicine into National health systems.
As part of the above-mentioned Summit on Traditional Medicine, 71 foreign delegates from different countries visited the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Kamla Nehru Nagar, Near CBI Academy, Hapur Road, Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) on 17.12.2025, which is a satellite Institute of NIUM, Bengaluru. NIUM, Ghaziabad, was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi Ji on 11.12.2022.
It is stated that NIUM, Ghaziabad, has been established with a 200-bedded hospital (consisting of OPD, IPD – Day Care Unit, General Ward, Semi-deluxe and Deluxe rooms), Academic and Administrative Block, Girls Hostel, Boys Hostel, Auditorium, Residential quarters, Director’s bungalow and Guest House. NIUM, Ghaziabad, has specialised OPDs – Skin, Nephrology, Psychiatry, Hepatobiliary, Chest Clinic, Community medicine & Geriatrics, Immunology, Neurology Clinic, Sexual disorders, Obesity & Nutrition. Regimenal facilities, Lab facilities and OT facilities, X-ray, ECG, etc., are also available. Presently, the daily footfall of patients is around 1400 to 1800.
At present, seven (7) Departments of NIUM, Ghaziabad are functional – i.e., Departments of Moalajat, Ilmul Advia, Qabalat wa Amraze Niswan, Ilmul Saidla, Ilaj Bit Tadbeer, Ilmul Jarahat and Mahiyatul Amraz and currently a total of 98 PG students are studying at NIUM, Ghaziabad.
The foreign delegation was welcomed by Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, Director, NIUM. The delegation then toured the 200-bedded Hospital and witnessed the functioning of the hospital, right from registration of patients to consultation with the Doctors in OPDs to the Drug dispensing unit, etc. The delegation was informed of the integrative approach adopted for consultation with Unani as well as Modern medicine doctors, and their benefits as well. At the Ilaj-Bit-Tadbeer (Regimenal Therapy) Unit, the delegation was apprised of facilities/therapies available. Some delegates experienced the cupping therapy and appreciated the procedure. Director, NIUM also made a presentation about the Unani system of medicine, Patient care facilities, Regimenal therapies, activities, publications/dissertations, academic & Research ecosystem and its collaborations. An interactive session was also organized during which questions raised by some of the delegates were answered by the panel of experts. Thereafter, the delegation visited the Gallery set by the Institute, where various books/publications/journals/posters, etc., on various aspects of Unani system of Medicine were showcased for information, and the queries of delegates were also well answered.
