Centre for Law and Policy Research Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR) is an organisation which aims to promote legal education,

CLPR is involved in high impact litigation work in the Supreme Court, the High Court of Karnataka and the subordinate courts. As part of its litigation work, the Centre has taken up matters in the areas of disability law, tobacco regulation law and urban infrastructure development law. The team of CLPR consists of lawyers and academicians carrying out research also in these areas. The Centre also

has a wide network of experts such as academicians, advocates and research organisations with whom it partners on several projects in order to make substantial intellectual contributions to law and policy related matters.

On June 28th, the Centre for Law and Policy Research hosted a roundtable titled ‘Pathways for Women from the Corporate Bar to the Higher Judiciary’ at the ITC Windsor, Bengaluru, engaging with women lawyers practising in corporate law firms. Over 15 lawyers, with years of experience in disputes or who started their careers in disputes practice across India, participated in the session both in person and online. Through a focused discussion, the participants addressed forms of gender-based discrimination they face daily in the corporate world, barriers to attaining leadership positions, the challenges of transitioning from the corporate bar to the judiciary, as well as ways to address and overcome these barriers.

On 12th June 2025, the Centre for Law and Policy Research hosted Kalangarai, a Tamil Nadu-based organisation working towards the emancipation and rehabilitation of widows and deserted women, to discuss the introduction of a bill addressing the discrimination faced by widowed and single women. Kalangarai had previously authored a research report titled “Widows in Tamil Nadu: In Search of Dignity, Safety, Human Rights and Entitlements.” Drawing from Kalangarai’s work, the CLPR team presented a background paper detailing the socio-cultural discrimination encountered by widowed and single women, as well as the legal framework in India and international conventions that address these issues and their gaps.

On 7th June 2025, the Centre for Law and Policy Research held a "Know Your Rights and Entitlements Session" at the Patrakarthara Bhavana in Kolar, focusing on the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (PoA Act). This session aimed to educate paralegal volunteers, activists, and individuals from the SC/ST community on the law’s provisions, its implementation challenges, and its crucial role in safeguarding the rights of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe victims of caste-related violence. The sessions focused on key definitions and major provisions of the Act and the obstacles encountered in enforcing the PoA Act. The sessions were led by Mr. Sivamanithan S, Assistant Professor at Alliance University; Ms. Yashoda, a member of the SC/ST Monitoring and Strengthening Committee in Karnataka; Dr. Netravathi, a Paralegal Volunteer; and the CLPR team.

Under CLPR's Constitutional Defender Fellowship, the fellows undertook a 2.5-year-long fellowship, during which they received training and provided legal representation, held legal clinics, conducted Know-Your-Rights sessions, and offered specialised legal assistance. Our Constitutional Defender Fellow, Kuldeep Kumar, who practises at the Allahabad High Court, shares one such case in which he provided legal representation and obtained compensation for the victim.

The event will comprehensively cover the legal protections provided under the Transgender Persons Act, 2019, the application process for a TG Certificate, and the various schemes and welfare benefits available for transgender individuals.
