AHS 2025: The connection between Autism and Play

Coming up Today ...

Date: 26-Apr 2025
Segment 5: Transformative Play Therapy Techniques
Topic: Exploring the Benefits of the DIR/Floortime Approach
Speakers: Dr. Jeffrey Guenzel & Ms. Gretchen Kamke

The DIR/Floortime model, developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, is a holistic approach to understanding and supporting human development, particularly for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or other developmental challenges. DIR stands for Developmental, Individual-differences, and Relationship-based, emphasizing three core components: recognizing developmental stages, respecting individual differences, and fostering relationships to fuel growth. Floortime, a practical application of the DIR model, involves engaging with children at their level—often through play—to build emotional connections and encourage active participation. This child-led approach is designed to enhance communication, emotional functioning, and daily living skills while strengthening parent-child interactions.

AHS 2025: The connection between Autism and Play

Coming up Today ...

Date: 23-Apr 2025
Segment 5: Transformative Play Therapy Techniques
Topic: Innovative Play Therapy Approaches and Do We Need Costly Equipment to Develop Play?
Speaker: Dr. Robert Jason Grant

Dr. Robert Jason Grant's approach to play therapy emphasizes the fundamental principle that, despite the diversity of play therapy models, they all converge on one essential element—the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the child. This relationship serves as the foundation for meaningful growth, providing a safe and supportive space where children can express themselves, process emotions, and develop essential skills.

Play therapy facilitates change in children due to the inherent therapeutic power of play itself. Through play, children engage in self-exploration, emotional regulation, and social interaction, leading to positive behavioral and developmental shifts. This process is not merely incidental—it is intentional and structured to harness the natural way children communicate and learn.

A common misconception persists that autistic children do not engage in play. However, Dr. Grant’s approach challenges this notion by affirming that autistic children do play—just in ways that are meaningful to them. Their play may differ from neurotypical patterns, but it remains a crucial avenue for self-expression, learning, and connection. Recognizing and honoring their unique play styles is key to fostering growth and understanding in therapeutic settings. By embracing the individuality of autistic children’s play, therapists can create interventions that resonate deeply, promoting meaningful therapeutic outcomes.

Speaker: Ms. Mini Dwivedi Gopinathan

This presentation reflected that Play is the work of childhood. Creativity is its language. Let every child speak it in their own way. You don’t have to spark their creativity—you only need to notice when it shines, and let it grow. Different doesn’t mean less creative. It means creative in ways the world hasn’t learned to see yet.

Segment 5: Transformative Play Therapy Techniques
Topic: Fostering Creativity in Autistic Individuals Through Play
Speaker: Ms. Mini Dwivedi Gopinathan

This presentation highlights that creativity is not just about art or imagination—it's a vital part of how children, including those with autism, learn, express emotions, and connect with others. Autistic children may show creativity in unique ways—through patterns, routines, or detailed play—and need environments that honor their preferences while gently expanding their experiences. By supporting sensory exploration, movement, pretend play, and interest-based activities in a safe, pressure-free space, adults can nurture flexible thinking, emotional growth, and self-expression. The key is to follow the child's lead, celebrate small steps, and recognize that creativity looks different for every child.
