Communication is the essence of life and there is no substitute for communication. We all want children to speak, but in our effort to develop speech in children with communication impairment, we believe that we understand our child’s communication attempts. This is a mere assumption and many times we might not even have the slightest clue about what the child wants to express.
Most parents are in a dilemma when they are advised to use an AAC system wondering if this is the last option, or my child is too young for it or my child uses few words so is it meant for us?
For all those who are considering the use of Augmentative and Alternative communication systems, but have questions like …
• Should we try focusing on developing speech first?
• Isn’t it too early to focus on an AAC system?
• Will my child get dependent on the communication system?
• How can he/she use the system in the classroom/other environments?
Join Dr Preeja Balan as she moderates a session on “Voices of AAC (users) and parent’s perspectives: A panel discussion” where parents talk about their personal experiences and learning through their journey of exploring AAC systems. View how some of our users indicate their preferences and describe their thoughts. Let us get an insight into how a user feels when they find a voice through a communication system in their own words.
