The 3 basic elements of risk management

it boils down to the three main things that can happen to any one of us: living, dying and becoming disabled:
1. Live: Making sure that if we live a long life, we don’t run out of assets.
2. Die: Maintaining our families’ and/or business’ lifestyle if we were to die prematurely.
3. Disabled: Insuring that if we become too sick or hurt to work or carry on our daily activities, we have money available to cover that care and replace our lost income.

I remind my clients what airlines announce at the beginning of a flight: In the event of an emergency, an oxygen mask will drop in front of you. You must place the oxygen mask on yourself first and breathe, before you can help others around you. Similarly, both critical illness insurance and life insurance are financial oxygen that protect us. The only question generally is how much financial oxygen we need to protect ourselves, our families and our business.
