Case Study Highlight: Precision Diagnosis for CMV Retinitis Using Whole Metagenome Sequencing

At Dhiti Omics, we had the opportunity to assist in the diagnosis of a 26-year-old male, HIV-positive and on antiretroviral therapy, who presented with blurred vision in his left eye for two weeks.
He was clinically suspected of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis — a potentially vision-threatening condition common among immunocompromised patients.

Using an aqueous humor sample, our team conducted comprehensive pathogen identification through our in-house Whole Metagenome Sequencing powered by the Nanopore platform.
Our findings:

Virus detected: Human beta-herpesvirus 5 (Cytomegalovirus)

No detection of bacteria, fungi, or parasites

No antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes found

By leveraging unbiased, broad-spectrum sequencing — with no restriction to known pathogens — we provided clinicians with precise, actionable insights that helped guide targeted therapy and patient management.

Yesterday, on World TB Day 2025, Dhiti Omics had the privilege of sponsoring the Multidepartmental CME on Tuberculosis at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, in collaboration with Mount Sinai Hospital, New York.
