A study published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology found that young people with sickle cell disease who live in areas with higher air pollution have an increased risk of hospitalization with acute chest syndrome. Researchers analyzed data for 94 children and young adults and found that exposure to nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter smaller than 10 micrometers was associated with higher risk.
