Using ‘Wh’ questions

* Use two sets of cards: one with questions (e.g., “What do we eat?”) and one with answers (e.g., “An apple”).

* Lay out the question cards in one row and the answer cards in another.

* Pick a question card and ask the child to find the matching answer card.

* Let them physically place or “fix” the cards together.

* Use hints or clues for harder questions (e.g., pointing to relevant features on the cards).

* Introduce new vocabulary while discussing the matches (e.g., “Yes, this is a nest. Birds live there!”)

* Use reinforcement strategies: Give positive feedback or rewards for correct matches.

* Encourage the child to create their own WH questions after matching the cards.

* This activity enhances language skills, comprehension, and problem-solving while keeping it fun and engaging!

Pattern writing is one of the requisites of pre-writing in children.

Things to keep in check:
1. How they hold the pencil/crayon grip
2. How much pressure they are applying on the paper

Best tips to keep in mind:
1. Start making them write with chalk and on a slate
2. Give them smaller pieces of chalk so that it forces them to use only a pincer grip to hold the chalk
3. Start with lines and then move on to curves
4. Start with tracing and then move on to connecting dots at the end of the patterns. The next step is to copy an existing pattern. The final step is to independently draw a pattern on their own
Skills covered in the pattern writing concept:

1. Eye hand coordination
2. Visio motor integration
3. Attention and focus
4. Bilateral integration
5. Hand dominance

*Self care in children with Down Syndrome*

Self care refers to one's ability to take care if themselves, including skills such as feeding, toileting, hygiene and dressing.

Remedial and behavioural therapists at Parijma work on:

1.Task analysis: It refers to breaking down tasks into smaller steps, starting with where the child has difficulties and beginning support there.

2.Social modelling: Involves demonstrating how to complete a self care task. Encouraging parents to involve siblings, peers and other family members in fun ways to motivate the child

3.Visuals and visual schedules: Children with down syndrome are powerful visual learners. Using visual sequences that lay out each step of a task can support learning new skills. They can also be used to incorporate new skills into a daily routine.

4.Rewards and reinforcement: Children with down syndrome generally lack intrinsic motivation, so providing them with extrinsic motivation or an incentive can be beneficial.
