The word Ego translates to "Ahamkaara"!
Aham = Self, Kara =Significator.
Ego doesn't mean arrogance.
It's our own self identity factor. How we define ourselves.
The concept of self identity of human minds is brilliantly defined by the Psycho Analytical theory of Sir Sigmund Freud. Accordig to this theory tehre are 3 basic elements of human psyhe. An interaction between these 3, defines our decision making ability, nature and ones overall personlity.
1st element is "ID" = it's the primitive and instinctual part of the mind. which rules over our desires and basic needs.Raw instincts which we get by birth. This can be associated to the planet MOON.
2nd element is "EGO" = It's the reality principle. This controls our basic needs and impulses and helps us to attain them by accomodating and dealing with the real world in a more practical and socially acceptable way. This can be corelated to the planet SUN.That's why Sun gets exalted in the sign of Aries, which signifies our primary needs. Sun is the best planet to lead Aries, of basic needs and desires, or survival.
3rd element is "SUPER EGO" = This is the judgement principle. Which constantly pushes us to abide by the laws and values of the society and live according to expectations of others. This can be corelated to the planet "SATURN". Which is exalted in the sign of Libra. It instills a fear in us of being judged by the society, so we consider others needs too. Its empathy, aka "Antahkarana"!
If ID and Super ego are too much in a person, then person will not be able to take actions to attain his goals of fulfilling his basic needs. So a healthy balance of all these elements makes one perfectly healthy.
EGO is the idealistic part that mediates well between ID and the SUPER EGO.
EGO or PLANET SUN, IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EXECUTING ACTIONS TO ATTAIN ONES GOALS WITHOUT HARMING THE NORMS OF THE SOCIETY, YET KEEPING ONE SELF MOTIAVTED AND KARMA ORIENTED ALL THE TIME.
That's why wisemen/women always say listen to your SOUL or SUN.
Good placement of SUN, sign wise and house wise gives a good sense of self, ie EGO.
Now when one/all these 3 elements are in debility and aspected by Rahu,(which leads to delusion), makes one have an inflated false sense of self. Can be termed as Covert vulnerable narcissist.
And Rahu aspect these in exalted position, also gives a delusionl ego, a grandiose sense of self. Termed as overt grandiose narcissist.
But with other negative impacts these can give a personality disorder.
Jupiter's,(a planet of expansion) dark aspect on these elements also makes one a narcissist.
Well, while narcissism is a personality trait, acquired by almost 40% of the population, NPD or Narcissistic Personality Disorder is completely different, and it's a clinically diagnosed disorder.
