The Sacred Welcomed

How should we approach the transcendent? The Indian, in particular Kuchipudi approach offers the 'pelvis to the earth' (to quote Yamini), on the other hand ballet and its conspirator western music, seeks to float above gross reality. In the piece above, we see we can simply welcome the sacred.

The concert 'lines unbound' by Yamini Kalluri, Neville Bharucha, Gulzara Shakir was centred about what happens when Western Classical music & Kuchipudi & Jazz meet? When concert hall is invaded by dance, or should we say returned to dance? Is fusion, abomination or evolutionary?

The last piece the one featured above, celebrated an authentic synergy, rising above experiment at crossover.

Interestingly there were 3 dancers on stage. Yamini obviously, But Gulzara was incredible, she did not play the violin, she tangoed with it, Bharucha the pianist prodigy is obviously expressive... Allowing us to wonder at further synergies, what if in another concert, the violinist was surrounded by dancers? What if Piano was centrestage? What if Piano went from classical to Indian classical?

To a Spiritualist, there was so much, the determination of Yamini to make it in US. The vehemence of Gulzara... Bharucha's insight of concert hall & dance... And of course the attempt to build bridges and therefore to reexamine oneself.

Inclusivity is Indian.

When Shiva-Shakti Unite all is embraced. Damru-duality a dance by Vidhya Subramanian and Sparsh, took the Damru as symbol of deep unity. And among other things the dance saw a deep affirmation of the possibility of harmony. Between man & woman, man & nature, earth & infinity...

And it is easy to forget in today's world that India sees Earth as alive, as Shiva's drumbeat, the Shakti's contours. Dog as child. Love as glue that binds family, nation & Cosmos.

(Now some would say "hey I am not a Shaivite", Okay, use the word 'mind', supreme intelligence, encompassing principle instead... El-lah and MahaDeva are the same thing in different languages... )

And some will say but I am inclusive and not Indian. True. But Greek & Indian philosophies are not enemies. Rather close.
