डॉ. अब्दुल कलाम जब राष्ट्रपति थे तब एक बार उन्होंने कुन्नूर का दौरा किया था। जब वे वहां पहुंचे तो उन्हें पता चला कि फील्ड मार्शल सैम मानेकशॉ का वहां के सैन्य अस्पताल में इलाज चल रहा था।

डॉ. कलाम सैम मानेकशॉ से मिलने अस्पताल पहुंचे। उन्होंने सैम के स्वास्थ्य के बारे में पूछताछ की। जाने से पहले डॉ. कलाम ने सैम से पूछा, "क्या तुम्हें यहां कोई परेशानी हो रही है? क्या मैं ऐसा कुछ कर सकता हूँ जिससे आपको अधिक सहज महसूस करने में मदद मिले? तुम्हें कोई शिकायत तो नहीं है?"'

सैम ने कहा, "हाँ.. मुझे एक शिकायत है।"

चिंतित कलाम जी ने चिंतित स्वर में पूछा, "आपकी शिकायत क्या है?"

सैम ने कहा, "सर, मेरी शिकायत यह है कि मेरे प्यारे देश के सबसे सम्मानित राष्ट्रपति यहां खड़े हैं, लेकिन मैं उन्हें सलामी नहीं दे पा रहा हूं।"

यह सुनकर डॉ. कलाम ने सैम का हाथ थाम लिया.. एक पल के लिए दोनों की आंखों से आंसू बहने लगे।

जाते जाते मानेकशॉ ने राष्ट्रपति को एक बात बताई। उन्हें फील्ड मार्शल के पद की बढ़ी हुई पेंशन नहीं मिली थी।

(2007 में सरकार ने निर्णय लिया था कि जीवित फील्ड मार्शलों को सेवा प्रमुखों के बराबर पूर्ण पेंशन मिलनी चाहिए, क्योंकि फील्ड मार्शल रैंक के अधिकारी कभी सेवानिवृत्त नहीं होते हैं।)

दिल्ली पहुंचने पर कलाम ने मात्र एक सप्ताह में उनकी पेंशन की पूरी बकाया राशि सहित भुगतान करवा लिया। रक्षा सचिव लगभग 1.30 करोड़ रुपये का चेक लेकर विशेष विमान से वेलिंग्टन, ऊटी पहुंचे।

एक महान व्यक्ति ने दूसरे महान व्यक्ति के काम की कद्र की थी।

लेकिन.. जैसे ही उन्हें चेक मिला, सैम मानेकशॉ ने पूरी राशि सेना राहत कोष में दान कर दी!!
