Beta-Glucuronidase → Estrogen Dominance
Ever feel like your hormones are “stuck”? One reason could be an enzyme in the gut called beta-glucuronidase.

🧠 In simple words:
This enzyme can unlock estrogen that your liver already packed for removal—sending it back into circulation.
📌 High beta-glucuronidase is linked with:
Estrogen dominance
PCOS
Endometriosis
Weight gain around hips & thighs

🌿 Functional medicine focus:
We don’t suppress hormones,we fix the gut bacteria producing this enzyme.

✨ Supportive foods: cruciferous veggies, fiber, probiotics, polyphenols.

Estrogen Is Recycled in the Gut
Did you know?
Your body doesn’t just make estrogen- it also needs to clear it properly.
In functional medicine, we say:
👉 Estrogen detox happens in the liver, but estrogen exit happens in the gut.
If your gut is sluggish, inflamed, or constipated:
Estrogen that should leave the body gets reabsorbed. This leads to estrogen dominance
✨ What this can look like:
PMS, heavy periods, PCOS, stubborn lower belly fat, mood swings, infertility.
💡 Gut-friendly tip:
Daily bowel movement = hormonal balance.
Fiber, hydration, bitter foods, and gut healing matter more than calorie counting.

✨ Rainbow Plate, Balanced Life ✨
What if you could give your body a full spectrum of healing; with just what’s on your plate?

Fill half your plate with colourful, fresh vegetables and fruits- red, orange, yellow, green, purple, white.

Every colour brings a different kind of nourishment: from antioxidants to vitamins to phytonutrients that protect your cells, support circulation, reduce inflammation, and strengthen immunity.

A “rainbow diet” helps more than digestion — it supports heart health, brain health, detox pathways, immune balance, and overall wellness.

🌿 Try this today: build your next meal with 3–5 different colours on the same plate. Watch how nourishment becomes a form of healing.

👉 What colour do you reach for most often and why? Share below 👇

💡 Pro Tip: Start your meal with the greens & protein first — this helps stabilize blood sugar and avoid that post-meal crash.

Your meals should energise you, not make you want a nap. 💚

Dietary Changes That Can Improve Acid Reflux
Diet is one of the most powerful tools for improving reflux symptoms.
Reducing foods that irritate the digestive system can significantly improve stomach function.
During the recovery phase, it can be helpful to reduce or temporarily avoid:
• Highly processed foods
• Excess sugar
• Heavy meat intake
• Spicy and fried foods
• Citrus and tomato-based foods
Some individuals may also benefit from temporarily removing gluten and dairy for about two weeks to see if symptoms improve.
Certain natural foods may also support digestive healing, such as:
• Fresh cabbage juice
• Bottle gourd juice
• Anti-inflammatory whole foods
Simple dietary changes can often create noticeable improvements in digestion and reflux symptoms.
✨ Healing the gut often begins with simplifying the diet.

If acid reflux has become a frequent issue, evaluating your diet may be the first step toward better digestive health.

Acid blockers such as PPIs are commonly prescribed to manage reflux symptoms. While they may provide temporary relief, long-term use can create other digestive challenges.
Stomach acid is necessary for nutrient absorption, and reducing it for long periods can lead to deficiencies.
Studies have linked prolonged acid suppression with lower levels of nutrients such as:
• Vitamin B12
• Iron
• Magnesium
• Calcium
• Folate
• Vitamin C
• Zinc
Deficiencies in these nutrients can contribute to issues such as:
• Fatigue
• Depression
• Memory problems
• Nerve damage (neuropathy)
• Digestive problems
• Osteoporosis
Another possible consequence is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). When stomach acid is reduced, bacteria that would normally be eliminated may grow excessively in the small intestine.
This can lead to bloating, diarrhea, malabsorption, and further digestive distress.
✨ Acid suppression may control symptoms, but it doesn’t always address the underlying imbalance.

If you’ve been taking acid blockers long-term, it may be helpful to review your digestive health and nutrient status with a functional medicine practitioner.

Hidden Causes of Acid Reflux Most People Don’t Know About
Acid reflux isn’t always caused by food alone. There are several hidden physiological causes that are often overlooked.
One of them is magnesium deficiency, which commonly occurs during chronic stress. Magnesium helps relax the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve that keeps stomach contents from moving upward. When magnesium levels are low, this valve may not function properly.
Other overlooked contributors include:
• Food sensitivities, especially gluten and dairy
• Gut bacterial imbalance from antibiotics, hormones, or high sugar diets
• Yeast overgrowth in the gut
• H. pylori infection, a bacterium linked to stomach inflammation and reflux
When harmful bacteria or yeast grow in the digestive tract, they ferment food and create gas. This pressure inside the stomach can push acid upward into the esophagus.
This is why reflux is often a digestive imbalance rather than simply an acid problem.
Understanding these underlying causes is essential for long-term relief.
✨ When digestion works properly, reflux symptoms often improve naturally.

Persistent reflux symptoms may indicate gut imbalances or nutrient deficiencies. Functional medicine testing can help identify these hidden factors.

Many everyday foods and habits can trigger or worsen acid reflux symptoms.
Some of the most common dietary triggers include:
• Fried foods
• Spicy foods
• Citrus fruits
• Tomato-based foods
• Processed foods
• Alcohol
• Excess caffeine
Lifestyle habits also play a major role.
Eating right before bedtime or eating when the stomach is already full can push food upward into the oesophagus. Being overweight or carrying excess abdominal weight can also increase pressure on the stomach, contributing to reflux.
Another often-overlooked factor is chronic stress. Stress affects the nerves controlling digestion and slows stomach function, making it harder for the body to process food properly.
This is why even small habits like breathing deeply before meals can improve digestion.
In functional medicine, we look at reflux as a whole-body issue, not just a stomach problem.
✨ Food, lifestyle, and stress all play a role in digestive health.

If you frequently experience reflux after meals, it may be time to look at diet and lifestyle triggers more closely. Stay tuned tomorrow as we explore deeper causes many people don’t realise.

Acid reflux, gastritis, and GERD are often blamed on “too much stomach acid.” But in many cases, that’s not the real issue.
Stomach acid is actually essential for good health. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach helps to:
• Break down food properly
• Absorb vitamins and minerals
• Kill harmful pathogens
• Support healthy digestion
The real problem occurs when acid moves upward into the oesophagus, where it doesn’t belong. That’s when the burning sensation and discomfort appear.
Interestingly, low stomach acid is often an underlying cause of reflux. When stomach acid is insufficient, food doesn’t digest properly. This can lead to gas, bacterial overgrowth, and increased abdominal pressure, which pushes stomach contents upward.
Yet, many treatments focus only on reducing stomach acid, instead of addressing why digestion isn’t functioning properly in the first place.
Functional medicine takes a different approach- we ask why the reflux is happening.
✨ Because managing symptoms is one thing.
Understanding the root cause is where real healing begins.

If you struggle with acid reflux or GERD, our functional medicine approach focuses on finding the root cause rather than masking symptoms. Follow our page this week as we break down the real drivers of reflux.

Chronic Stress & Insulin Resistance
When the body is under constant stress, it releases higher levels of cortisol, the primary stress hormone. While cortisol is essential for short-term survival, chronically elevated levels can significantly disrupt metabolic health.

Over time, persistent stress can contribute to insulin resistance, making it harder for your cells to respond properly to insulin and regulate blood sugar.

When chronic stress combines with poor sleep, the effects become even stronger:
• Higher circulating insulin levels
• Increased fat storage, especially around the abdomen
• Stronger sugar and carbohydrate cravings
• Greater difficulty maintaining stable energy levels

These changes are not just about diet or exercise; they are deeply connected to the body’s stress response system.

In functional medicine, stress management is not viewed as optional self-care—it is a key therapeutic intervention. Supporting the nervous system through quality sleep, mindful practices, balanced nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments can play a major role in restoring metabolic balance.

Your metabolism responds to how you live, not just what you eat.

Festivals are not just about indulgence; they’re about connection.
Connection with family.
Connection with tradition.
And perhaps, connection with your body.
Holi often comes with sugar spikes, fried foods, irregular sleep, and overstimulation. For someone dealing with insulin resistance, gut imbalances, PCOS, thyroid concerns, or chronic fatigue; these shifts are felt deeply.

Functional medicine asks, how can we support the body while we celebrate?

-Support digestion.
-Stabilise blood sugar.
-Hydrate well.
-Prioritise sleep.
-Add fiber before sweets.
-Choose balance over extremes.
Happy Holi ✨
