Hernia surgery is a procedure to repair a bulge or weakness in the muscle wall, commonly in the abdomen or groin. Types of hernias include inguinal (in the groin), umbilical (around the belly button), hiatal (through the diaphragm), incisional (through a previous surgery scar), and femoral (in the upper thigh). Surgery can be done through open surgery, where a larger incision is made, or minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, which uses small incisions and a camera for guidance. In both methods, the hernia is pushed back into place and reinforced with mesh to prevent recurrence. Recovery is typically quicker with laparoscopic surgery, while open surgery requires 4–6 weeks for full recovery.
