↔️Contracture:
develops when the normally stretchy (elastic) tissues are replaced by nonstretchy (inelastic) fiber-like tissue. This tissue makes it hard to stretch the area and prevents normal movement.
Types of contractures:
‼️Arthrogryposis:
Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), or simply arthrogryposis, describes congenital joint contracture in two or more areas of the body. It derives its name from Greek, literally meaning "curving of joints"
AMC has been divided into three groups:
1- amyoplasia
2- distal arthrogryposis and
3- syndromic.
✍️Burn scar contracture:
is the tightening of the skin after a second or third degree burn. When skin is burned, the surrounding skin begins to pull together, resulting in a contracture. It needs to be treated as soon as possible because the scar can result in restriction of movement around the injured area. This is mediated by myofibroblasts
✍️ Clubfoot:
is a birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward. The affected foot and leg may be smaller in size compared to the other.
✍️Dupuytren's contracture:
is a condition in which one or more fingers become permanently bent in a flexed position. It usually begins as small, hard nodules just under the skin of the palm, then worsens over time until the fingers can no longer be straightened. While typically not painful, some aching or itching may be present. The ring finger followed by the little and middle fingers are most commonly affected. The condition can interfere with preparing food, writing, and other activities.
✍️Freeman–Sheldon syndrome:
Freeman–Sheldon syndrome (FSS) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by multiple contractures (i.e., restricted movement around two or more body areas) at birth (congenital), abnormalities of the head and face (craniofacial) area, defects of the hands and feet, and skeletal malformations.
✍️Marden–Walker syndrome:
A rare developmental defect during embryogenesis characterized by multiple joint contractures (arthrogryposis), a mask-like face with ,
- blepharophimosis (eyelids are underdeveloped such that they cannot open as far as usual and permanently cover part of the eyes),
- micrognathia (child has a very small lower jaw) , high-arched or cleft palate, low-set ears, decreased muscular bulk, kyphoscoliosis and arachnodactyly(spider fingers).
✍️ Myostatic contracture:
is a condition of permanent shortening in resting muscle which persists after section of the motor nerve. It develops when- ever a muscle is immobilized by section of its tendon, by paralysis of its antagonists or by fixation of the limb in a plaster cast.
✍️ Pseudomyostatic contracture:
An apparent permanent contraction of a muscle due to a central nervous system lesion, resulting in loss of range of motion and resistance of the muscle to stretch.
✍️ Volkmann ischemic contracture
is a permanent shortening (contracture) of forearm muscles, usually resulting from injury, that gives rise to a clawlike deformity of the hand, fingers, and wrist. It is more common in children. A similar condition can occur in the foot....!!!
