In India, mental health trends among children and adolescents show a deeply alarming picture, driven by intense academic pressure, pervasive social media influence, societal stigma, and persistent gaps in mental healthcare infrastructure.

The path forward
Addressing these trends requires a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach that extends beyond the healthcare system to include families, schools, and policymakers.
1. Integrate mental health into education: Incorporating mental health education and social-emotional learning into school curricula is a vital step toward reducing stigma and normalizing conversations.
2. Strengthen school support systems: Appointing trained counselors in schools, empowering teachers to recognize warning signs, and creating confidential reporting mechanisms are essential.
3. Regulate social media: Promoting digital literacy and responsible social media usage can help mitigate its negative effects. Encouraging offline activities is also important.
4. Expand access to care: Initiatives like the Tele-MANAS helpline show progress in expanding access to mental healthcare, but more investment is needed to reach rural and underserved populations.
5. Tackle stigma directly: Public awareness campaigns and the involvement of media can help combat misinformation and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

In India, mental health trends among children and adolescents show a deeply alarming picture, driven by intense academic pressure, pervasive social media influence, societal stigma, and persistent gaps in mental healthcare infrastructure.

Key trends
1. Worrying prevalence rates: According to the National Mental Health Survey (2016), 7.3% of adolescents aged 13–17 in India suffer from mental health conditions.
2. Rising su***de rates: Su***de is the leading cause of death for young people aged 15–29 in India. Data shows a significant and rising trend of su***de rates among children and adolescents, with forecasts indicating this will continue over the next decade.
3. Early onset of disorders: Mental health experts in India are increasingly seeing mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder in children as young as 9 or 10 years old, a trend that was previously more common in older adolescents.
4. Digital overload and social media's impact: High social media usage is strongly correlated with increased anxiety, stress, depression, and lower self-esteem among Indian youth.

A new large-scale study has found that skipping breakfast and eating late dinners are independently associated with an increased risk of osteoporotic fractures.

The key findings include:
1. Increased fracture risk: Those who skipped breakfast more than three times a week had an 18% higher risk of an osteoporotic fracture compared to those who ate breakfast regularly.
2. Late dinner adds risk: Eating dinner within two hours of bedtime more than three times a week was linked to an 8% higher fracture risk.

What you can do
The study's takeaway is that small, consistent changes in routine can contribute to long-term bone resilience.
1. Prioritize breakfast: Start your day with a nutritious breakfast, even a small one, to deliver essential nutrients to your bones.
2. Eat dinner earlier: Aim to finish your last meal at least two to three hours before bed to allow for better digestion and metabolic function.
3. Be consistent: Establish and maintain regular eating patterns to align with your body's natural clock.

“Cell phone addiction” may refer to a compulsive and excessive reliance on mobile devices that causes negative consequences in various aspects of life. However, some studies suggest children and teens may experience an overwhelming preoccupation with cell phones. This may lead to an inability to control or limit phone usage, even in situations where their use is inappropriate. It may cause them to neglect their responsibilities and relationships and exhibit restlessness and anxiety when unable to access their phones.

Problematic smartphone use can have several adverse effects on children and adolescents. These may include:

1. Impaired social skills: Excessive smartphone usage can hinder the development of crucial social skills, causing difficulties with face-to-face interactions, empathy, and effective communication.
2. Reduced academic performance: Spending too much time on smartphones may diminish interest in learning.
3. Sleep disturbances: Looking at screens before bedtime may cause changes in sleep patterns, difficulty falling asleep, and reduced quality sleep. This may lead to fatigue and limited alertness the following morning.
4. Emotional and mental well-being: Excessive smartphone use can negatively impact a child or teen’s emotional state. It may contribute to feelings of loneliness, depression, and low self-esteem.
5. Increased risk of cyberbullying and online dangers: Spending excessive time on a smartphone exposes children and teens to potential hazards, such as cyberbullying, online predators, and inappropriate content.

Echocardiography is a test that uses sound waves to produce live images of your heart. The image is called an echocardiogram. This test allows us to monitor how your heart and its valves are functioning.

The images can help them get information about:

1. the size of the heart, for instance, if there is any change in the chamber size, dilation, or thickening
2. blood clots in the heart chambers
3. fluid in the sac around the heart
4. problems with the aorta, which is the main artery connected to the heart
5. problems with the pumping function or relaxing function of the heart
6. problems with the function of heart valves
7. pressure in the heart

Behind every piece of clothing in a store, there is an industry stripping the Earth of its limited resources and exploiting the labor force that works in its garment factories. Tremendous waste characterizes this industry as it depletes healthy soil, contaminates fresh water sources, pollutes the air we breathe, defiles our oceans, destroys forests and damages eco-systems and the health of their biodiversity.

Let us pledge towards making Sustainable fashion a part of our lives.

Sustainable fashion refers to a clothing supply chain that is ecologically and socially responsible. It aims to reorient the industry and consumers away from the fast fashion model and toward sustainable practices in sourcing, production, distribution, marketing, and consumption.

Understanding Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Symptoms
- Initial symptoms often include muscle weakness or stiffness in the arms, legs, or neck.
- Individuals may experience twitching in the hands, feet, shoulders, or tongue, as well as muscle cramps.
- Slurred or nasal speech and difficulty chewing or swallowing (dysphagia) can also be early signs.
- As the disease progresses, these symptoms spread, leading to further muscle weakness and atrophy.
- Ultimately, individuals may become unable to stand, walk, use their hands and arms, or breathe on their own.

Causes
- The exact cause of ALS is unknown.
- Both genetics and environmental factors are believed to play a role.

Understanding Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord called motor neurons.

What it does?

- These motor neurons are responsible for sending messages from the brain to the muscles that control voluntary movement, including walking, speaking, swallowing, and breathing.

- In individuals with ALS, these motor neurons gradually degenerate and die, causing muscles to weaken, twitch (fasciculations), and waste away (atrophy).

- Eventually, the brain loses its ability to initiate and control these voluntary movements.
