Your emotions aren’t hardwired—they’re built. 🧠

That racing heart? It could be fear. Or excitement.
That burst of anger? Sometimes it’s hurt, stress, or exhaustion underneath.

Your brain creates emotions by guessing what your body feels, based on your past and your environment.

💡The best part?
You can train it to guess better.
You can name emotions more accurately.
And respond more calmly, more wisely.

Yes, emotional intelligence is learnable.
And it starts with awareness.

🧘‍♀️ Pause. Feel. Re-label. Heal.

Atypical depression is a subtype of major depressive disorder that presents with specific features different from “typical” depression. Despite its name, it is not rare. In fact, it is common, especially among adolescents and young adults.

Key Features:
• Mood reactivity: Mood can temporarily improve in response to positive events.
• Increased appetite or weight gain
• Excessive sleep (hypersomnia)
• Heavy feeling in the limbs (leaden paralysis)
• High sensitivity to rejection, leading to social or occupational impairment

Why It Matters:

Atypical depression can be misdiagnosed or overlooked. It often starts early in life and may co-occur with anxiety or personality disorders. However, it responds well to treatment, especially psychotherapy and certain antidepressants (like SSRIs).

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, it’s important to seek help. A psychiatrist can guide the right diagnosis and treatment.

Building habits isn’t about willpower—it’s about systems. As a psychiatrist, I often remind patients that small, consistent actions rewire the brain far more effectively than occasional bursts of motivation. Inspired by Atomic Habits, this comic illustrates how starting tiny (like one squat a day), making cues obvious, and stacking habits with existing routines (like tea or journaling) can lead to identity-level change. Instead of trying to work out, you become someone who exercises. Mental health and habit formation go hand in hand.
