The optical bench consists essentially of a graduated bar carrying three upright pieces, which can slide along the bar; the second upright from the right in the figure is an addition to be described later. The uprights are provided with verniers, so that their positions relatively to the bar can be read. To these uprights are attached metal jaws capable of various adjustments; those on the first and second uprights can rotate about a vertical axis through its centre and also about a horizontal axis at right angles to the upright; they can also be raised and lowered.

The second upright is also capable of a transverse motion at right angles to the length of the bar, and the amount of this motion can be read by means of a scale and vernier. - The jaws of the first upright generally carry a slit, those of the second are used to hold a bi-prism or apparatus required to form the diffraction bands.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the second most common cause of hospital acquired (Nosocomial) infections. These complications of surgical procedures cause considerable morbidity and, when these occur deep at the site of the procedure, can lead to mortality as high as 77%. The source of SSIs may be endogenous (normal flora of the patient’s skin, mucous membranes, or viscera) or exogenous, which includes surgical personnel (especially members of the surgical team), the surgical room environment (including air, floor & wall), and tools, instruments, and materials brought to the sterile field during surgery. By maintaining sterile environment in surgical theater we can control major part of exogenous infections.
Formaldehyde fumigation has long been an accepted method of sterilization for areas where microbiological cleanliness is required. Fumigation with formaldehyde v***r is the recognized and most commonly used method because of its cost effective procedure (Alternative: v***rized hydrogen peroxide; expensive).

Fumigation Procedure
Formaldehyde v***r is an extremely effective biocidal agent. It acts as an alkylating agent, inactivating micro-organisms by reacting with carboxyl, amino, hydroxyl and sulphydral groups of proteins as well as amino groups of nucleic acid bases. Fumigation is effective at above the temperature of 20ºC and relative humidity of 65%.
Formalin is commercially available as 40% solution of formaldehyde in water. When formalin is heated formaldehyde v***r is generated. Formaldehyde is a Schedule 1 chemical under the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations and has a Maximum Exposure Limit (MEL) of 2 ppm. But, concentrations encountered during fumigation is many hundred times higher than this, so fumigation procedure must be carried out only by trained personnel under strictly defined conditions. All workers using formaldehyde must be aware of safe handling procedures.
Under certain conditions formaldehyde can react with hydrochloric acid and chlorine containing disinfectants such as hypochlorites to form chlormethyl ether, a potent lung carcinogen. So hydrochloric acid and chlorine-containing disinfectants must be removed from the room before fumigation.

Bubble CPAP is a non-invasive ventilation strategy for newborns with infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS). It is one of the methods by which continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is delivered to a spontaneously breathing newborn to maintain lung volumes during expiration. With this method, blended and humidified oxygen is delivered via short binasal prongs or a nasal mask and pressure in the circuit is maintained by immersing the distal end of the expiratory tubing in water. The depth to which the tubing is immersed underwater determines the pressure generated in the airways of the infant. As the gas flows through the system, it “bubbles” out[1] and prevents buildup of excess pressures.

Bubble CPAP is appealing because of its simplicity and low cost.[2] It is also associated with a decreased incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)[3] compared to mechanical ventilation. Not all infants with IRDS are candidates for initial treatment with CPAP and not all those who are given CPAP can be successfully managed with this modality.[2]

A homogenizer is a piece of laboratory or industrial equipment used for the homogenization of various types of material, such as tissue, plant, food, soil, and many others. Many different models have been developed using various physical technologies for disruption. The 'mortar and pestle', already used for thousands of years, is a standard tool even in modern laboratories. More modern solutions are based on blender type of instruments (also known in the kitchen), bead mills, ultrasonic treatment (also sonication), rotor-stator mechanical, high pressure, and many other physical forces.[1]

Whereas older technologies just focused on the disruption of the material, newer technologies also address quality or environmental aspects, such as cross-contamination, aerosols, risk of infection, or noise.

Homogenization is a very common sample preparation step prior to the analysis of nucleic acids, proteins, cells, metabolism, pathogens, and many other targets.

Defibrillation

View of defibrillator electrode position and placement.
Defibrillation is a common treatment for life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias and ventricular fibrillation. Defibrillation consists of delivering a therapeutic dose of electrical current to the heart with a device called a defibrillator. This depolarizes a critical mass of the heart muscle, terminates the dysrhythmia and allows normal sinus rhythm to be reestablished by the body's natural pacemaker, in the sinoatrial node of the heart.

Defibrillators can be external, transvenous, or implanted (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator), depending on the type of device used or needed. Some external units, known as automated external defibrillators (AEDs), automate the diagnosis of treatable rhythms, meaning that lay responders or bystanders are able to use them successfully with little or no training.

An isolated organ bath assay is the classical pharmacological screening tool to assess concentration-response relationships in contractile tissue. Although a variety of molecular tools have become available in recent decades to assess cellular responses in high-throughput quantities, the organ bath assay is still considered a valuable tool for lead optimization and for the elucidation of the mechanism of action. In addition, organ bath assays are widely used in preclinical safety studies.
