Congenital heart disease happens when something goes wrong while the heart is forming in a baby that's still in the womb. The heart abnormality sometimes leads to problems right after birth, but other times there aren't any symptoms until you become an adult.

Septal abnormalities are among the most common congenital heart problems. These are holes in the wall that separates the left and right sides of your heart. You can get a procedure to patch the hole.

Another type of abnormality is called pulmonary stenosis. A narrow valve causes a decrease in the flow of blood to your lungs. A procedure or surgery can open or replace the valve.

In some babies, a small blood vessel known as the ductus arteriosus doesn't close up at birth as it should. When this happens, some blood leaks back into the pulmonary artery, which puts strain on your heart. Doctors can treat this with surgery or a procedure or sometimes with medication.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
This condition usually develops when a genetic problem affects the heart muscle. It tends to be an inherited condition.

The walls of the muscle thicken, and contractions become harder. This affects the heart’s ability to take in and pump out blood. In some cases, an obstruction can occur.

There may be no symptoms, and many people do not receive a diagnosis. However, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can worsen over time and lead to various heart problems.
Anyone with a family history of this condition should ask for screening, as receiving treatment can help prevent complications.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the main cause of cardiac deathTrusted Source among young people and athletes under 35 years old, according to the AHA.

What is an Enlarged Heart?
An enlarged heart(cardiomegaly) means that your heart is bigger than normal.
Your heart can become enlarged if the muscle works so hard that it thickens; or if the chambers dilate.
An enlarged heart isn’t a disease. It’s a symptom of a heart defect or condition that makes the heart work harder, such as:

cardiomyopathy
heart valve problems
high blood pressure
An enlarged heart can’t pump blood as efficiently as a heart that’s not enlarged. This can lead to complications like stroke and heart failure.

Damage to the brain from interruption of its blood supply.
A stroke is a medical emergency.
Symptoms of stroke include trouble walking, speaking and understanding, as well as paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg.
Early treatment with medication like tPA (clot buster) can minimise brain damage. Other treatments focus on limiting complications and preventing additional strokes.
Requires a medical diagnosis
Lab tests or imaging always required
Treatment can help, but this condition can't be cured
Critical: needs emergency care

A heart arrhythmia (uh-RITH-me-uh) is an irregular heartbeat. Heart rhythm problems (heart arrhythmias) occur when the electrical signals that coordinate the heart's beats don't work properly. The faulty signaling causes the heart to beat too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia) or irregularly.

Every year, more than 7,000 children and teens die in the U.S. from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Many of these deaths can be prevented if children and parents recognize the early warning signs of SCA and seek medical attention before a crisis occurs.

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating due to an abnormality in its electrical pulses. This abnormal rhythm can result in rapid quivering of the heart (ventricular fibrillation) or no heartbeat at all (asystole).

A child who experiences a sudden cardiac arrest loses consciousness, stops breathing or gasps for breath and becomes unresponsive, possibly with shaking (seizure-like) movement. CPR and use of an automated external defibrillation (AED) within two to five minutes of the event can prevent an interruption in blood flow to the brain.
If you or any of your family members are having any such issues, consult Dr Sarat Kumar Sahoo as soon as possible.
