Telemedicine is rapidly gaining traction as a tool to provide convenient access to healthcare services to individuals. It is being used increasingly to provide remote diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions and to facilitate patient-clinician communication. Telemedicine can also be used for preventive care, remote monitoring of chronic illnesses, and follow-up appointments. It utilizes technology such as video conferencing, email, and telephones as well as data-sharing technologies such as electronic medical records (EMRs) and other digital health applications to enable healthcare providers to diagnose and treat patients from a distance. Telemedicine has many benefits including improved access to care, improved continuity of care, improved coordination of care, improved patient satisfaction, increased convenience and flexibility, and cost savings. Additionally, telemedicine enables healthcare providers to create meaningful relationships with their patients through remote care. Given its potential, it is important for healthcare providers to understand how to effectively use telemedicine technologies in order to optimize patient outcomes.
