Today is World Trauma Day !

A day to remind ourselves to be more careful and take all necessary precautions to avoid injuries.

The prevention of recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers, lies in treating toe and foot deformities.

This patient presented to us after having undergone amputation for the great toe and a non healing ulcer in the 2nd toe. An ulcer that would not heal due to continuous friction during walking.

Along with treatment of ulcer, this patient underwent a toe deformity correction for toe tip ulcer. Note the amount of improvement in the angle and correction of deformity. This ‘Surgical offloading’ goes a long way in ulcer healing and preventing recurrences.

An important facet of Plastic Surgery is deformity correction whether be it in post burn , post traumatic or diabetic foot ulcers .

Diabetic foot surgery has evolved over the years, from being only infection control surgeries to deformity corrections.

It is now an established fact that diabetic foot ulcers and their recurrences are due to biomechanical factors and mismanaged deformities.

Pts with diabetic ulcers suffer silently till they are mentally, physically and financially drained out.

Diabetic ulcers are an important factor in chronic infections and toe/major amputations later on in patients.

The crux lies in seeking early help as all the ulcers in diabetic foot are treatable in their early stages and if the biomechanical factors are adequately taken care off by surgical offloading involving bones, muscles and tendons, they heal without recurrences.
