Endometriosis can cause infertility in a number of ways, including:
Scar tissue
Endometriosis tissue can cause inflammation and scar tissue to form around the ovaries and fallopian tubes, or on other organs in the pelvis. These scar tissue bands, called adhesions, can make it difficult for s***m and eggs to meet.
Pelvic anatomy distortion
Endometriosis can distort the pelvic anatomy, which can impair the release of eggs, s***m motility, and fertilization.
Altered hormonal environment
Endometriosis can change the hormonal environment around eggs, which can affect the quality of the eggs and their ability to be fertilized.
Immune system changes
Endometriosis can alter the immune system.
Ovarian cysts
When endometriosis involves the ovaries, cysts called endometriomas can form.
Endometriosis is a common cause of infertility, affecting between 30% and 50% of women who are infertile. In most cases, endometriosis can be treated to improve symptoms and fertility.
