NEW GUIDELINES IN FETAL MEDICINE:
The pancreas is a J-shaped organ situated in midline in the fetal abdomen.
On B-mode ultrasound, the pancreas appears as a homogeneous, echogenic structure when compared with the liver.
Color Doppler of Splenic vein is used to locate fetal pancreas.
However, the use of the splenic vein to identify the pancreas is limited in cases of asplenia and right atrial isomerism.
Abnormalities of pancreatic morphology have been described in fetal overgrowth syndrome, heterotaxy and maternal nesidioblastosis.
New genetic disorders associated with abnormal pancreatic morphology have been recognized. This has put a spotlight on the fetal pancreas.
