Retainers are Orthodontic gadgets designed to hold the corrected teeth in the final position. The most commonly used ones are called the Hawley’s retainers; while the most sought after ones are the fixed retainers, which are bonded on the inside of the upper and lower teeth, where patients do not have to remove and put back the retainers, before and after eating, respectively. The removable Hawley retainers and the Wrap around retainer, another type of removable retainer, both, have a wire running across the front of the teeth which is visible while talking and smiling. Also, the plastic part on the inside, is a speech impediment for the initial few days. The other kind of retainer which many prefer is the transparent ones, which is almost invisible when put on teeth, as well as, hardly an impediment while talking. One of the reason, many stress on having the transparent retainers, in lieu of the regular ones. A word of caution here. Retainers are gadgets which have an action and a reaction. It is in your best interests, that you let the orthodontist decide which type of retainer would work best for you. Your orthodontist understands the mechanics of each type of retainer, as well as, the inside story of your teeth and jaw relationships. He/She will be the best person to decide upon the best for you.

Braces coming off is a big occasion for all those who undergo orthodontic treatment. After months of having something bind the teeth together, the feeling of moving the tongue on the smooth surface of the beautifully aligned teeth, is beautiful. The euphoria, many a times, proves counterproductive when patients do not comply with wearing the retainers as advised. After moving all the teeth from one position to the other, the bones and gums surrounded teeth , to put it simply, are sort of, in a state of flux. It takes a few months before the gums and the bones around the teeth, which are now no longer bound together, organize themselves completely and allow the teeth to settle in its most optimal position completely. Wearing the retainers as advised by the orthodontist helps in this process. Not complying with this instruction, especially in the first few months immediately following removal of braces, results in the teeth moving out of alignment. Avoid putting to waste, the hard work and efforts you put to get a healthy beautiful smile. Wear the retainer as instructed by your orthodontist.

Always confident of what he does, Mr M K Reddiyar always found something amiss in his smile.
All thanks to his orthodontist, Dr Sanjay Ganeshkar even that is not a problem any more.
