Q- What is Diabetes ?
Long standing disease condition characterized by either insulin deficiency or under-utilization of the available insulin.
Insulin helps body cells to use sugar to convert it in energy. In Diabetes, either body does not make enough insulin or it can't use insulin well.
Thus, due to relative deficiency of insulin in the body, glucose cannot be used to meet the body's energy demand
-> Types of Diabetes -
1. Type 1 Diabetes - Due to destruction of insulin-making cells. Happens at younger age,
5-10% of diabetics have type 1 Diabetes. They Need to take insulin every day
2. Type 2 Diabetes (2DM)- Metabolic problem
・ Late onset- starts in the adults
• 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2, Can be managed with oral medicines,
3. Gestational Diabetes - Develops in pregnant women who never had diabetes. Usually goes away after delivery. Increases risk for type 2 diabetes later in life. Also Your baby is at risk to have obesity or type 2 diabetes.
4. Prediabetes - Sugar levels are higher than normal, but not very high Raises risk for T2DM, heart disease, stroke . A lifestyle change can help you to reverse it .
