Foreign body sensation in throat??

Nasal foreign bodies:

*Nasal foreign bodies are seen almost exclusively in children population.

*These foreign bodies may be organic or inorganic.

*Most of the time patient present immediately if the history of foreign body is known.

*A child with a neglected or long standing foreign body in nose may present with unilateral purulent, foul smelling and blood stained discharge.

*A radiograph of the nose or nasal endoscopy may be helpful in diagnosing such condition.

*A foreign body left in the nose may result in:
1)Nasal infection or sinusitis.
2)Rhinolith formation.(stone formation)
3)Inhalation into tracheobronchial tree.

Foreign bodies in Ear:

*It is a common problem encountered by ENT Specialists.

*Foreign bodies may be :

1)Non living:Eg:piece of paper,broken matchstick, cotton swab, metallic ball bearing,seed grains etc.
*Vegetable foreign bodies viz gram seeds are considered notorious as they tend to swell up with time and get tightly impacted in ear canal.

2)Living: Insects viz Mosquitoes,Bettles,cockroach etc.

*Various Methods of removing foreign body are:
1) Syringing.
2) Suctioning.
3) Forceps removal.
4)Microscopic Removal.
5)Endoscopic Removal.
6)Post Aural approach.

*Most of the time foreign bodies are removed without the need of any anaesthesia, however in case of impacted foreign bodies, or in those where earlier attempts at extraction have failed, or in case of uncooperative patient or small child, it is preferable to use general anaesthesia and an operating microscope or endoscope.
