Pterygium, also known as surfer's eye, is a common eye condition characterized by the growth of a fleshy, triangular-shaped tissue on the conjunctiva (the clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye) towards the cornea (the transparent front part of the eye). It typically develops on the side of the eye closest to the nose (can effect temporal side also)and can affect one or both eyes.

Progressive pterygium is thick, fleshy and vascular with a few infiltrates in the cornea, in front of the head of the pterygium.
Regressive pterygium is thin, atrophic, attenuated with very little vascularity. Ultimately, it becomes membranous but never disappears.

The exact cause of pterygium is not known, but it is believed to be associated with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, dry and dusty environments, chronic eye irritation, and certain genetic factors. People who spend a lot of time outdoors, such as surfers, are more prone to developing pterygium.

Symptoms of pterygium can vary but may include:
A raised, pinkish, or yellowish growth on the white part of the eye
Redness and inflammation
Itching or burning sensation
A gritty or foreign body sensation
Blurred vision if the growth extends onto the cornea.
In most cases, pterygium is a benign condition and does not require treatment unless it causes significant discomfort or affects vision. For mild cases, lubricating eye drops or ointments may be recommended to relieve symptoms. In more severe or rapidly progressing cases, or if vision is affected, surgical removal of the pterygium may be necessary.

Prevention is key for individuals at risk of developing pterygium. It is advisable to wear sunglasses that block UV rays, use protective eyewear in dusty environments, and keep the eyes well lubricated to minimize dryness and irritation.

If you suspect you have pterygium or are experiencing any eye-related concerns, it is essential to consult an eye care professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
