Reminder for taking care of your skin this holi
Holi Skin Care
Yes!! The much awaited festival of colours 'HOLI' is just round the corner. It's a time of fun & frolic but with holi also comes risk of being smeared with colours containing chemicals, irritants and even toxic metals.
Here is a summary of the few basic steps you need to take during Holi to prevent the harmful effects of the colours on your skin.
- Adequate cover up :: Before you step out for the celebrations, make sure you pick up clothes that cover maximum part of your body, preferably either high-necks or full-sleeves. The more your body will be covered, the lesser you have to worry to take the stains off.
- Avoid wearing white or light-colored clothes as these clothes let to absorb more amount of colour.
- Moisturise : Apply cold cream or oil on all the exposed parts. This forms a barrier and makes your skin greasy and slippery preventing deeper pe*******on of colours in the skin.
- Also apply a thick layer of waterproof sunscreen lotion before stepping out. Playing Holi outdoors under the sun, with harsh colors can very well be a cause for getting severe tan.
- Never sit in sunlight after playing with colours.
- Oil your hair from the scalp to the tip the night before.. Give your scalp a gentle massage before you sleep and repeat the process in the morning.
- Do not leave your hair open. Tie it into a ponytail or a bun and cover your head with a scarf.
- Application of a thick layer of Vaseline under your nails, behind your ears and on lips is highly recommended before you step out.
- Protect your nails: Trim your nail short and put in your favorite nail paint and once dry cover them up with the petrolatum jelly/ oil. This will help you keep your nails and the cuticles safe from the harsh colours and the chemicals.
- In case you feel any irritation or itching on the skin during play, wash the area immediately with cold water. This will reduce the instant inflammation, which once subdued can be further treated with a local soothing agent like calamine lotion or a thick moisturiser.
- Hydrate yourself : Keep drinking as much as water you can, both before leaving the house and after coming indoors. Always keep in mind that the colors contain chemicals which sn**ch away moisture from the skin, so it becomes very important to keep re-hydrating your skin.
- Once you are indoors , try to remove the colours as soon as possible i.e wash off the colors while wet. The earliest, the better, for once if the colors dry, it becomes a little difficult to get rid of them easily. Don't panic though, if you cannot wash them off while wet, they would come off eventually with every shower.
- Never ever rub your skin vigorously with soap in a quest to wipe the face off colours. Rubbing would aid in pe*******on of colors causing more skin damage.
- Most of the fast colors are oil soluble, so slather oil on skin and relax. Alternatively, put paste of besan, curd, turmeric and rose water on the skin and wait until dry. Scrub the dry pack to remove stubborn colours.
- Also strictly avoid bleaching, waxing or facial for a week before and after Holi as these procedures leave the skin pores open allowing the colours to easily seep into the skin.
- Choose herbal colours as alternatives. Herbal colors are easily available in the market, and can be easily made at home too!- Try using natural colours such as henna, turmeric, marigold flowers, tomatoes and tea leaves for a safe and skin-friendly Holi.
- Do not use scrub, bleach, toner, skin lightening or anti-ageing creams and home remedies like lemon etc for few days.
In a nut-shell, enjoy Holi in the most lively manner with great vigor and fervent. At the same time, remain cautious towards 'post Holi' effects on your skin and take precautions well in advance
