10 REASONS YOU SHOULD QUIT SMOKING NOW!!

Cigarette smoking remains the most important cause of preventable morbidity and early mortality.

There are approximately 120 million smokers in India (12% of the world’s smokers.)

10 Reasons why you Should quit Smoking NOW!

1. Ci******es are responsible for one in every five deaths in India (More than 1 million/yr.)

2. Smokers die 5–8 years earlier than never-smokers.

3. They have twice the risk of fatal heart disease.

4. Smoking increases 10 times the risk of lung cancer; and several times the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and cervix.

5. Over 90% of cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) occur among current or former smokers.

6. In addition, about 10% of all smoking related deaths occur because of passive smoking. passive or second hand smoking is particularly harmful to children and can significantly increase a non-smoker's risk of getting lung cancer.

7. Smoking cessation reduces the risks of death and of myocardial infarction in people with coronary artery disease.

8. Smoking cessation lessens the risk of stroke; and is associated with improvement of COPD symptoms

9. On average, women smokers who quit smoking by age 35 add about 3 years to their life expectancy, and men add more than 2 years to theirs.

10. Smoking cessation can increase life expectancy even for those who stop after the age of 65 years

Holi Skin Care
Yes!! The much awaited festival of colours 'HOLI' is just round the corner. It's a time of fun & frolic but with holi also comes risk of being smeared with colours containing chemicals, irritants and even toxic metals.

Here is a summary of the few basic steps you need to take during Holi to prevent the harmful effects of the colours on your skin.

- Adequate cover up :: Before you step out for the celebrations, make sure you pick up clothes that cover maximum part of your body, preferably either high-necks or full-sleeves. The more your body will be covered, the lesser you have to worry to take the stains off.

- Avoid wearing white or light-colored clothes as these clothes let to absorb more amount of colour.

- Moisturise : Apply cold cream or oil on all the exposed parts. This forms a barrier and makes your skin greasy and slippery preventing deeper pe*******on of colours in the skin.

- Also apply a thick layer of waterproof sunscreen lotion before stepping out. Playing Holi outdoors under the sun, with harsh colors can very well be a cause for getting severe tan.

- Never sit in sunlight after playing with colours.

- Oil your hair from the scalp to the tip the night before.. Give your scalp a gentle massage before you sleep and repeat the process in the morning.

- Do not leave your hair open. Tie it into a ponytail or a bun and cover your head with a scarf.

- Application of a thick layer of Vaseline under your nails, behind your ears and on lips is highly recommended before you step out.

- Protect your nails: Trim your nail short and put in your favorite nail paint and once dry cover them up with the petrolatum jelly/ oil. This will help you keep your nails and the cuticles safe from the harsh colours and the chemicals.

- In case you feel any irritation or itching on the skin during play, wash the area immediately with cold water. This will reduce the instant inflammation, which once subdued can be further treated with a local soothing agent like calamine lotion or a thick moisturiser.

- Hydrate yourself : Keep drinking as much as water you can, both before leaving the house and after coming indoors. Always keep in mind that the colors contain chemicals which sn**ch away moisture from the skin, so it becomes very important to keep re-hydrating your skin.

- Once you are indoors , try to remove the colours as soon as possible i.e wash off the colors while wet. The earliest, the better, for once if the colors dry, it becomes a little difficult to get rid of them easily. Don't panic though, if you cannot wash them off while wet, they would come off eventually with every shower.

- Never ever rub your skin vigorously with soap in a quest to wipe the face off colours. Rubbing would aid in pe*******on of colors causing more skin damage.

- Most of the fast colors are oil soluble, so slather oil on skin and relax. Alternatively, put paste of besan, curd, turmeric and rose water on the skin and wait until dry. Scrub the dry pack to remove stubborn colours.

- Also strictly avoid bleaching, waxing or facial for a week before and after Holi as these procedures leave the skin pores open allowing the colours to easily seep into the skin.

- Choose herbal colours as alternatives. Herbal colors are easily available in the market, and can be easily made at home too!- Try using natural colours such as henna, turmeric, marigold flowers, tomatoes and tea leaves for a safe and skin-friendly Holi.

- Do not use scrub, bleach, toner, skin lightening or anti-ageing creams and home remedies like lemon etc for few days.

In a nut-shell, enjoy Holi in the most lively manner with great vigor and fervent. At the same time, remain cautious towards 'post Holi' effects on your skin and take precautions well in advance

Nail care :: tips for a safe manicure and pedicure

An improper manicure or pedicure can do more harm than good bringing with it the risk of developing serious bacterial and fungal infections. So before you step into a nail care salon keep a note of:

Make sure that the instruments used are properly cleaned (ideally sterilized) to avoid cross infections. You may even carry your own instruments for the same.

Do not allow the cuticle to be cut or pushed back since the cuticle protects the nail and removing it would increase the chances of developing bacterial and fungal infections.

Excessive and overzealous pedicure and manicure can result in white spots on the nails.

Avoid use of very sharp instruments to prevent trauma to the nails.

SUMMER IS HERE MOSQUITOES, MALARIA , DENGUE CANT BE FAR BEHIND..... HERES HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MOSQUITOES.

“Summer heat and humidity are heaven for insects; and since we’re all spending more time outside, we’re ripe for the biting."

For Protection

Try using bug spray with DEET ( N,N- diethyltoluamide ) that protects against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, leeches and many other biting insects but if you don’t want to use chemical bug spray, here are a few tips to keep the bugs away.

Wear light colored clothing. Mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colors.

Time Your Outings. Stay indoors during dusk and dawn – that’s when many breeds of mosquito are at their peak biting time.

Avoid Flowery Perfumes. Mosquitoes love nectar from flowers almost as much as they do humans, so stick with a less floral fragrance for the summer.

Stay Clear of Beer & Soda. Beer and soda are mosquito magnets – the bugs are attracted to the carbonation. It’s not confirmed if the extra biting also happens with other alcohols – but just to be safe, keep the bottles indoors.

Heat rash

Yes, the summer season is just round the corner so is the heat and rashes associated with it..this is a brief write up on ' miliaria' commonly known as the prickly heat , heat rash or sweat rash and the precautions you can take to protect yourself from the same.

# What is miliaria or heat rash?

Miliaria is a skin disease characterised by small red and itchy rashes. It is especially common during the hot and humid conditions, such as during the summer season. Although it can affect people of all ages, it is especially common in children and infants due to their underdeveloped sweat glands.

# Why do you get heat rash?

The two main factors leading to development of heat rash include:

- excessive sweating:
Activities which encourage sweating and the wearing of synthetic clothing are important precipitating factors. In winter, miliaria can result from swaddling up in too much clothing, sitting too close to the fire or heater and with the excessive use of electric blankets.

In hospital, it may be seen on the backs of people who are lying for prolonged periods in bed, particularly when they are sweating from an infection, heart attack or chemotherapy, or have been immobilized by a stroke, head injury or orthopaedic operation. For the same reason, obese individuals develop prickly heat commonly on body folds as these areas are devoid of air circulation due to skin-to-skin contact.

- obstruction of the sweat duct :

due to dead skin cells or bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The trapped sweat leads to irritation (prickling), itching and then a rash.

# What does it look like?

The typical spots develop in skin folds and on the body, especially in areas of friction from clothing. In infants lesions commonly appear on the neck, groins and armpits, but also on the face and elsewhere. It may present as tiny superficial clear blisters that break easily, as itchy red bumps with pins and needles sensation and as pus filled lesions due to inflammation and bacterial infection.

# What can be done to prevent heat rash?

Avoid activities that cause excessive sweating

Avoid further sweating Even if this is achieved for only a few hours a day, as in an air-conditioned office or bedroom, considerable relief is experienced.

For the very susceptible person a move away from tropical climates may be essential.

In case of a newborn, do not over dress the little one .

The posture of sick bedridden persons should be changed frequently to avoid the rash and pressure sores.
Similarly, obese people should pull the skin apart at folds and let it air dry.

Do not irritate the skin Avoidance of excessive clothing, friction from clothing, excessive soap and contact of the skin with irritants will reduce the liability to miliaria.

Preferably wear loose fitting cotton clothing.

Cool water compresses and good ventilation

Frequent cool showers with mild soap.

Calamine lotion

Do not apply creams or ointments as they may further block the pores and worsen the rash.

Remain hydrated by drinking at least 2-3 liters of water daily.

In most tropical areas the local dispensaries sell Prickly Heat Powder, a talc admixture containing drying milk proteins (Labilin) and Triclosan to fight the infection.

These include cooling menthol to help alleviate difficulty getting to sleep.

This is an effective treatment—the powder stays on the skin longer and treats bacteria dispersed into bed linens, providing a reasonably dry refuge area for healing.

Regular talcum powder will not reduce the rash but can alleviate burning and itching.

Visit your dermatologist if your rash is not responding to these general measures.

chemical peels which one is best for you

Peels can be differentiated into superficial, medium and deep peels according to the depth of skin they pe*****te. Most of the peels used now are superficial peels, because they have minimal healing time and no one can make out you have taken one.
