The year 1953 witnessed the humble beginnings of St. Thomas Hospital in the form of a 20 bedded clinic with one doctor, founded by the first Archbishop of Changanacherry Archdiocese Mar Mathew Kavukattu the holy visionary on behalf of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry. Thomas Hospital has emerged into St Thomas Institutions of Healthcare and Medical Education (STIHAME) which comprises of St. Thomas Hospital, St. Thomas Institute of Research on Venous Diseases, St. Thomas College of Nursing, St. Thomas College of Allied Health Sciences, St. Thomas Academy of Allied Health Sciences and St Thomas Health Centre, Manimala. With a phenomenal bed- strength of 460, 37 specialized departments, 107 doctors, 970 plus supporting staff with Siemens make Artis Pure Cath Lab, G E 1.5 Tesla MRI Scan, G E Revolution EVO 128 Slice CT, Echo Cardiograph & Colour Doppler Scan, X-RAY, ECG, Endoscopy, 24 hour Radiology ; 24 hour Lab; 24 hour Emergency services; 24 hour Pharmacy; Laboratory and more.
