What is a habit?
A habit is an automatic, unconscious behaviour pattern that resides within the brain. We do not decide 80%-90% of our activities. They happen automatically without our conscious involvement. It happens without one having to think of. One does not think how to eat or drive. They all happen automatically most of the time. It can be any human activity- thinking, feeling, and doing, acting and speaking. The brain does not distinguish good habits and bad habits. Brain cannot tell the difference between a good habit and bad habit. To the brain, it is an action and nothing more. `

Why the habits are automatic and happen unconsciously?
The brain is wired in a way, so that anything that is repeated becomes automatic. The first time you do something new, it takes time, requires mental effort, will, focus and energy. The brain needs to work to that specific act. The brain tries to optimise this complicated task, to be energy efficient, when repeated. The brain develops new wiring by making new connections. It forms new synapses (new connections in the neurons). That particular action follows a certain path. The more we use the certain path, the stronger it becomes. From a small treading path it becomes a bullock cart way, village road, main road, and highway. The information travels faster and easier on the Neuronal Highway that becomes the most travelled road. The action goes on Autopilot. The auto-piloting is unconscious action. You do without ever becoming aware of it. The brain need not think about how to do.

What are Errors of Thinking? Why?

Errors of thinking are irrational thoughts and beliefs that we unknowingly reinforce over time. In other words, errors of thinking are distortions of perception or Cognitive distortions. They are biased against the world and the self.

These patterns of thought are often subtle–it is difficult to recognize them, when they are a regular feature of your day-to-day thoughts. They are hard to change, since one does not recognize them as something that needs to change!

Cognitive distortions appear in many forms, but they all have some things in common. Invariably all cognitive distortions lead to negative feelings. All cognitive distortions are tendencies or patterns of thinking that are false or inaccurate and have the potential to cause psychological damage to the self and the relationship.
• They are self- degrading, often based against the self wrongly. They see the self, future, environment and others negatively.
• Cognitive distortions become an automatic behaviour.

• Cognitive distortions cause anxiety, depression and inter personal relationship problems.
