Peptic Ulcer Disease & Diclofenac – A Dangerous Combination

🩺 Patient with Peptic Ulcer Disease should NOT take Diclofenac.

❓ WHY?

🔴 Diclofenac is an NSAID
It blocks prostaglandins that protect the stomach lining.

🔴 In Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD):

Stomach lining is already damaged

Acid protection is reduced

🔴 What Diclofenac Can Cause:
❌ Worsening of ulcer
❌ Severe gastric irritation
❌ Gastrointestinal bleeding
❌ Perforation of stomach or duodenum
❌ Life-threatening complications

📌 High-Risk Patients:

Known peptic ulcer disease

History of GI bleed

Elderly patients

Patients on steroids / anticoagulants

✅ Safer Alternatives (Doctor’s Decision): ✔ Paracetamol
✔ Antispasmodics
✔ COX-2 selective NSAIDs (with PPI & caution)

🛑 Golden Rule:
Pain relief should never come at the cost of gastric bleeding.

Always inform your doctor about stomach pain, ulcers, or black stools before taking painkillers.
