Most Indians get over 60% of their daily calories from carbohydrates — much more than the body needs!

Our recent study based on the ICMR-INDIAB study shows that replacing just 5% of carbs with protein (like dal, eggs, fish, or milk) can reduce the risk of diabetes and obesity.

As a part of Nutrition Month Celebration 2021 at DMDSC Avadi branch, it was planned to emphasize the importance of Millets in a Diabetic diet.

Millets are the forgotten miraculous alternative for Rice and Wheat. Lot of researches proven its efficiency in reversing metabolic syndromes, and controlling Diabetes & Heart Diseases.

Why we need to incorporate millets?
• Adds variety to the diet
• Increase fibre content of diet
• Medium Glycaemic Index
• Gluten free
• Easily available
• Brings good satiety
• Contains other vitamins and Minerals content

Based on this, poster presentations and recipe demonstration were done. Recipes like Kodo Millet Biryani and brown rice flakes cutlet were prepared. Patients were enlightened about the usage of millets, methods of preparation, health benefits, Storage pre preparations and possible ways of including them in south Indian recipes. Following the session, recipe tasting was done and feedback was collected.

Patients enjoyed the recipes and shared the comments and collected the information about recipe ingredients and method of preparation. This awareness programme conducted served as an eye opener in understanding the real benefits of Millets.
