Series – Voices of Care: Oral Health for All
Every child deserves a healthy, happy smile including children with special needs.
Caring for their oral health may take extra patience, creativity, and specialized support. But with the right approach, every step can be made easier.
Here are 10 ways to simplify oral care for special children:
1. Tell–Show–Do” Technique 🪥
➡ Let your child touch the brush and toothpaste first, then demonstrate on yourself before brushing theirs. Builds trust.
2. Use Adaptive Toothbrushes 🖐
➡ Modified-handle brushes help children with poor grip or motor challenges hold better.
3. Visual Schedules & Storyboards 📖
➡ Use picture guides showing brushing steps (toothbrush → toothpaste → rinse → smile!) – This reduces anxiety and makes it predictable.
4. Choose the Right Sensory Tools 🎧
➡ For kids sensitive to noise, avoid electric brushes or use quiet ones. For those who enjoy vibration, an electric brush can actually help.
5. Flavor Sensitivity Check 🍓🪥
➡ Some children dislike mint toothpaste – try mild flavors (bubblegum, strawberry, unflavored) to encourage brushing.
6. Brushing in Different Positions 🪑
➡ If sitting in a chair doesn’t work, try brushing while the child lies down, or while they sit on your lap for security.
7. Use Positive Reinforcement ⭐
➡ Reward with a sticker chart, favorite song, or high-five after brushing. Builds a positive routine.
8. Break It Into Mini-Sessions ⏲
➡ If 2 minutes is too much, try 30-second sessions multiple times a day – small steps matter.
9. Mouth Props or Bite Blocks
➡ For children who have trouble keeping their mouth open, safe pediatric mouth props can make brushing easier.
10. Prepare for Dental Visits with Role-Play
➡ Pretend play “dentist visit” at home using a toy mirror and brush. Reduces fear before the actual appointment.
Let’s work together to build a world where every smile is included, every child is cared for, and no one is left behind. 🌍
