🧠 What are Benzodiazepines?
Commonly known as “benzos”, these are central nervous system (CNS) depressants used to treat anxiety, insomnia, seizures, muscle spasms, and alcohol withdrawal. They’re also used before surgery for their calming and amnesic effects.
💊 While effective short-term, long-term use can cause serious side effects, including:
• Memory problems
• Drowsiness & fatigue
• Poor coordination
• Emotional blunting
• Dependence & tolerance
• Withdrawal symptoms (even after short use)
🚨 Many people are not informed about the potential for addiction and protracted withdrawal.
🌍 World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day is observed on July 11th — the birthday of Dr. Heather Ashton, author of the Ashton Manual, a critical guide to understanding and tapering benzodiazepines safely.
