According to the World Health Report 2001, one in four of the world’s population is affected by mental illness or a psychological disorder during one’s lifetime. Only a few, however, receive even the most basic treatment. Mental illness ranks second among all social problems.

58 million Indians suffer some kind of mental illness.
90% of India’s mentally ill are never treated. There is only one psychiatrist for every 4,000 persons. The state government of Tamil Nadu has directed that there be at least one care facility in every district, each one accommodating a maximum of 50 residents.
