STAY ACTIVE, LIVE LONGER

Older people who are physically active throughout the day have better cardiovascular health and can enjoy a longer life regardless of whether they do regular exercise such as walking or not.
A study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine followed 4,232 Swedish men and women aged 60 and older for 12.58 years.
The researchers analysed non-exercise physical activity (NEPA) popular among Swedes such as gardening, do-it-yourself projects, car maintenance, cutting the lawn, home repairs and blackberry picking as well as any exercise they did.

Regardless of regular exercise, people who were the most active had a 27 per cent reduced risk of a heart attack or stroke and 30 per cent reduced risk of dying from any cause compared with the most sedentary people. Those who were active also had smaller waists and more preferable levels of markers such as high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides in both s*xes and lower insulin, glucose and fibrinogen levels in men.

Those who exercised regularly and were also very active during the day had the lowest risk of all. Sitting for long periods may lower the metabolic rate and alter hormones produced in muscle tissue. "The most feasible approach to reduce sedentary time is to promote NEPAs. This is particularly important for older adults as they tend to sit more compared to other age groups", Said the researchers.

Moderate Exercise During Pregnancy Helps The Baby's Brain Develop Much Better And Smarter:

Just 20 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week during pregnancy can boost the newborn`s brain development, according to a group of Canadian researchers. Women entering their second trimester were randomly assigned to either an exercise group that did 20 minutes of moderate-intensity cardiovascular exercise three times a week, or a sedentary group that did not exercise .
The brain activity of the newborns was analysed when they were between 8 and 12 days, using electroencephalography, which records the electrical activity of the brain. It involved placing 124 soft electrodes on the babies head to measure auditory memory based on the brain`s unconscious response to repeated and novel sounds. "Our results show that the babies born from the mothers who were physically active have a more mature cerebral activation, suggesting that their brains developed faster and better than the other group," noted the study author.
In the past, doctors had recommended pregnant women to rest, but now it is known that inactivity can cause numerous health problems. "While being sedentary increase the risks of suffering complications during pregnancy, being active can ease postpartum recovery, make pregnancy more comfortable and reduce the risk of obesity in the children".
