How to Choose a Rheumatologist
When you have pain in your joints or bones that your primary care doctor has been unable to ease, you may want to consider consulting a rheumatologist.

What do rheumatologists do, and why would you need one? Rheumatologists are specialists who treat arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and can also help you deal with tendonitis, osteoporosis, bursitis, and inflammatory back pain. In addition, rheumatologists treat diseases such as lupus, Sjogren’s syndrome, myositis, and scleroderma, plus pain syndromes like fibromyalgia.

How Can Working With a Rheumatologist Help You?

Rheumatologists understand the biology of rheumatic diseases and are well-equipped with information to target and treat them. A family practitioner may not have the depth of knowledge about some of these syndromes. The best-case scenario is having a primary care practitioner as well as a rheumatologist who both regularly coordinate arthritis care.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):

Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic renal disease or CKD, is a condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time.

Chronic kidney disease includes conditions that damage your kidneys and decrease their ability to keep you healthy by filtering wastes from your blood. If kidney disease worsens, wastes can build to high levels in your blood and make you feel sick. You may develop complications like:

• high blood pressure
• anemia (low blood count)
• weak bones
• poor nutritional health
• nerve damage

Kidney disease also increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may happen slowly over a long time. Early detection and treatment can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse. When kidney disease progresses, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

What’s the Connection Between Diabetes and Wound Healing?

Diabetes is a result of your body’s inability to produce or use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows your body to turn glucose, or sugar, into energy. If your body has difficulty metabolizing glucose, it can lead to high blood sugar levels. This can affect your body’s ability to heal wounds.

For this reason, it’s crucial to do regular self-checks and closely monitor any wounds closely. Catching wounds early is the only way to reduce your risk of complications.

Why wound healing is slow:

• High blood sugar levels
• Neuropathy
• Poor circulation
• Immune system deficiency

Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

Sudden cardiac arrest is the abrupt loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness. The condition usually results from a problem with your heart's electrical system, which disrupts your heart's pumping action and stops blood flow to your body.

Symptoms:
Signs of sudden cardiac arrest are immediate and drastic and include:

• Sudden collapse
• No pulse
• No breathing
• Loss of consciousness

When to see a Doctor:

Call emergency medical help if you experience any of these signs and symptoms:

• Chest pain or discomfort
• Heart palpitations
• Rapid or irregular heartbeats
• Unexplained wheezing
• Shortness of breath
• Fainting or near fainting
• Lightheadedness or dizziness

When the heart stops, the lack of oxygen-rich blood can cause death or permanent brain damage within minutes. Time is critical when you're helping an unconscious person who isn't breathing.

Risk Factors:

• A family history of coronary artery disease
• Smoking
• High blood pressure
• High blood cholesterol
• Obesity
• Diabetes
• An inactive lifestyle

Prevention:

Reduce your risk of sudden cardiac arrest by getting regular checkups, being screened for heart disease and living a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Gastrointestinal Diseases - Symptoms & Treatment:

GERD, diarrhoea and colorectal cancer are examples of gastrointestinal diseases. When examined, some diseases show nothing wrong with the GI tract, but there are still symptoms. Other diseases have symptoms, and there are also visible irregularities in the GI tract. Most gastrointestinal diseases can be prevented and/or treated.

What are functional gastrointestinal diseases?

Functional diseases are those in which the GI tract looks normal when examined, but doesn't move properly. They are the most common problems affecting the GI tract (including the colon and re**um). Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, food poisoning, gas, bloating, GERD and diarrhea are common examples.

Many factors may upset your GI tract and its motility (ability to keep moving), including:

• Eating a diet low in fiber.
• Not getting enough exercise.
• Traveling or other changes in routine.
• Eating large amounts of dairy products.
• Stress.
• Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement, possibly because of hemorrhoids.
• Overusing anti-diarrheal medications that, over time, weaken the bowel muscle movements called motility.
• Taking antacid medicines containing calcium or aluminum.
• Taking certain medicines (especially antidepressants, iron pills and strong pain medicines such as narcotics).
• Pregnancy.

Can gastrointestinal diseases be prevented?

Many diseases of the colon and re**um can be prevented or minimized by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, practicing good bowel habits and getting screened for cancer.

A colonoscopy is recommended for average-risk patients at age 45. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, a colonoscopy may be recommended at a younger age. Typically, a colonoscopy is recommended 10 years younger than the affected family member. (For example, if your brother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer or polyps at age 45, you should begin screening at age 35.)

Cardiac Arrest: Risk Factors, Symptoms, and Treatment

Cardiac arrest is a serious heart condition. The word arrest means to stop or bring to a halt. In cardiac arrest, the heart ceases to beat. It’s also known as sudden cardiac death.

Your heartbeat is controlled by electrical impulses. When these impulses change pattern, the heartbeat becomes irregular. This is also known as an arrhythmia. Some arrhythmias are slow, others are rapid. Cardiac arrest occurs when the rhythm of the heart stops.

Who Is at Risk for Cardiac Arrest?

• Coronary Heart Disease
• Large Heart
• Irregular Heart Valves
• Congenital Heart Disease
• Electrical Impulse Problems

Treating Cardiac Arrest:
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one form of emergency treatment for cardiac arrest. Defibrillation is another. These treatments get your heart beating again once it has stopped.

If you survive a cardiac arrest, your doctor may start you on one or more treatments to reduce the risk of another attack.

• Medication can lower high blood pressure and cholesterol.
• Surgery can repair damaged blood vessels or heart valves. It can also bypass or remove blockages in the arteries.
• Exercise may improve cardiovascular fitness.
• Dietary changes can help you lower cholesterol.

If you have experienced cardiac arrest, it’s important to understand the cause. Your long-term outlook will depend on the reason you experienced cardiac arrest. Your doctor can talk to you about treatment options to help protect your heart and prevent cardiac arrest from happening again.
