Dengue fever! Never be Panic!
What is dengue fever?
Dengue is an acute viral infection with fatal complications spread by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. First clinically recognized epidemics occurred during 1780s in Asia, Africa and North America. It was earlier known as ‘break bone fever’ due to severe muscular and bone pain. It is a communicable disease, which means it can spread.
How it spreads?
Dengue occurs mostly during the rainy seasons between July to October. It is spread by aedes mosquito, female mosquito usually bites during morning hours, while sucking blood of a dengue affected persons dengue virus enters the body of mosquito and develops further, when this mosquito bites another unaffected person virus enters into the blood and spreads. Dengue symptoms occur after 5 – 6 days.
Adult female Aedes mosquito lays some 100 to 200 eggs at a time, and during its life time it can produce 5 batches of eggs. So, you can imagine how fast it can spread. Hence better avoid storing water in open areas, avoid throwing waste bottles, tea cups etc. Your garbage is your responsibility. If you are taking care of your surrounding you will never be a victim.
What are all the symptoms?
Symptoms occur in simple dengue fever usually includes sudden rise of temperature, feeling with chills, severe headache, pain in muscles and joints, extreme weakness etc. Patients usually feel depressed and very sick. Along with these symptoms it may be associated with bleeding from nose, gums, blood in stools or in vomiting and there may be dark bluish-black patches on the skin.
How to manage?
For simple fever always keep the patient in an airy and cool environment, dress a simple cotton clothing, gently massage the body so that the cutaneous vessels gets dilated and dissipate heat. Sponge bath using lukewarm water will be helpful to reduce the temperature. Sufficient amounts of fluids like kanji should be given at regular intervals’. Give complete rest for the patient. Always keep in mind that medical counselling and intervention is mandatory.
Fever in Siddha!
Siddha literatures classifies fever under single heading as ‘Suram’. Siddha describes sixty four types of fever among which Pitha Suram may be correlated with dengue in which bleeding is a distinct manifestation.
Benefits of Nilavembu Kudineer!
Nilavembu Kudineer is a unique product of Siddha which contains eight kinds of herbs all mixed in equal proportions which is recommended for Pitha Suram and Kulir Suram in Siddha literatures. Nilavembu (Swertia chirata) is called as King of bitters. It shows fever reducing (antipyretic), antimicrobial properties. Two grams of Nilavembu Kudineer powder can be mixed with 240 ml of water and boiled to reduce 60 ml. For adults 50 to 60 ml can be given and for children 30ml is sufficient.

10 ml of fresh, tender papaya leaf juice can be given twice daily for five to seven days is highly beneficial in increasing the platelets. It’s also available in other dosage forms like pills and capsules.
