The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Paramahansa Yogananda’s founding of the international headquarters of Self-Realization Fellowship — where he lived, taught, and communed with God for more than 25 years. From this 12 1/2-acre site atop Mt. Washington in Los Angeles (USA), lovingly named by him as the SRF Mother Center, his teachings on Kriya Yoga meditation and the underlying unity of the world's great religions are disseminated worldwide.

Today marks the birth anniversary of Lahiri Mahasaya (1828 – 1895).
Lahiri Mahasaya is renowned as a seminal figure in the renaissance of yoga that began in modern India in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In 1861, Mahavatar Babaji initiated him into the science of Kriya Yoga—and this tradition continues to this day through the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.
Paramahansa Yogananda wrote in “Autobiography of a Yogi”: “To the awe of all beholders, Lahiri Mahasaya’s habitual physiological state exhibited the superhuman features of breathlessness, sleeplessness, cessation of pulse and heartbeat, calm eyes unblinking for hours, and a profound aura of peace. No visitors departed without upliftment of spirit; all knew they had received the silent blessing of a true man of God.”

On this day in 1895, Lahiri Mahasaya entered mahasamadhi, a Self-realized yogi’s final conscious exit from the body.
Lahiri Mahasaya is revered as a Yogavatar, an incarnation of Yoga, exemplifying the highest ideal of Yoga — blissful union of one’s individual consciousness with God’s cosmic consciousness. He was the first to teach Kriya Yoga in contemporary times, and his blessed life has been chronicled for the ages in Paramahansa Yogananda’s “Autobiography of a Yogi.”
Yoganandaji wrote: “As the fragrance of flowers cannot be suppressed, so Lahiri Mahasaya, quietly living as an ideal householder, could not hide his innate glory. Devotee-bees from every part of India began to seek the divine nectar of the liberated master....The harmoniously balanced life of the great householder-guru became the inspiration of thousands of men and women.”

Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS) was founded by Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda in 1917. The mission of YSS is to make available to all the ancient scientific teachings and meditation techniques of Kriya Yoga for achieving all-round success, well-being, and a direct personal experience of God. YSS has more than 200 centers across India to help all Truth-seekers to experience the power of group meditations and to share in spiritual fellowship. Yogoda Satsanga Dhyana Kendra, Chennai is situated at Site 14A, 31 South Boag Road, T. Nagar, Chennai 600017. The Kendra conducts group meditations and satsangas aimed at disseminating the timeless teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.
In 1960, a Meditation center was started in Chennai in humble settings at Mylapore, an old enclave of Chennai. In the early 1970s, the Kendra was shifted to the Kilpauk area and remained there until a new Kendra was inaugurated in T. Nagar in 2019.
During the late ’60s and early ’70s, Chennai devotees were blessed by visits by YSS-SRF’s 3rd president, Daya Mataji. During her visits, she initiated many devotees in Kriya Yoga. Many of Paramahansa Yogananda’s direct disciples have also visited Chennai during the ’70s and ’80s as part of their tours of India.
The Kendra is a hive for devotees-bees to participate in regular group meditations and personally experience the “nectar” of God’s presence within. As part of the meditation services, healing prayers are offered to all who ask for it as well as prayers for world peace and brotherhood. The Kendra celebrates the birth and Mahasamadhi days of YSS Gurus during the year. On such occasions commemorative long-meditations are held on preceding Sunday and the last Sunday of each month. Satsangs in Tamil are held every second Sunday of the month.
The Kendra has a book store where one may browse/purchase many of Yoganandaji’s writings, talks, and other publications from YSS, including CDs/DVDs. Kendra activities have grown significantly in the last few years, especially since the release of Tamil translations of Yoganandaji’s writings beginning in 2000.
To better equip and educate the youth, the Kendra conducts Sunday school for children between 6 to 14 years on the “How-to-live” wisdom of the YSS Gurus. The Kendra also holds humanitarian services (such as flood relief, medical camps, and poor feeding) periodically.
