In the story of Madras, few landmarks reflect the city's commercial and cultural evolution like Dare House. Built in 1940 to replace the old Parry & Co. office, it was named not after the founder but after his partner, William Dare. The reason was simple. The book ‘Parrys 200’ by veteran journalist Mr NS Ramaswami and the chronicler of Chennai Mr S Muthiah states that the building had several prominent tenants, including the American Consulate, the Madras Chamber of Commerce, and the European Association. These esteemed tenants felt having ‘Parry’ on their letterheads may constitute free advertising.

By 1947, First Line Beach had become the heartbeat of business in Madras. It was home to iconic British firms like Beardsell, Best & Co., Crompton, Gordon Woodroffe, Binny and Parry. Today, only one name still stands strong: Parry. Its survival and continued relevance are thanks to the Murugappa Group.

Dare House is more than just a building. It is a living part of the city. A symbol of how the city has held on to its heritage even as it moved forward.
