Thank you to everyone who has been with us over the last 9 years. We have grown stronger and more self-reliant every day every year. We have fought through every unforeseen challenge with only one thing in mind - to continue to Serve. Thank you to the incredible superstars of Atmanirbhar once sidelined by the world but who have risen over disability, difficult livelihood situations, flood, cyclone, Covid, and continued to show up and keep the work going. Thank you to our kind supporters and friends - you give us the ground to find our footing and land safely. Here’s to living with dignity, self-reliance, and empathy for all.

AASHA deeply mourns the loss of our dear mentor and guide Padma Bhushan Dr Sarada Menon She was instrumental in the creation of the family model of care for people with mental health issues in India and AASHA was the outcome of that. She was kind, empathetic and an inspiration to everyone who knew of her. She touched the lives of many individuals battling mental health issues, families who came to her for solace and people who were inspired to follow her foot steps.

This week we reopened Atmanirbhar store in Selaiyur which is located outside Aasha rehabilitation home. This means 6 ppl will be gainfully employed and engaged and take baby steps towards living an equal life.

This year the theme on World Mental Health day 2021 is ‘Mental health in an unequal world’. While we live in an extremely unequal world, equality can begin with you. You decide how equally you look at the world.

Don’t Stigmatise people who have mental health issues. They are not lesser, there is nothing "wrong" with them, they don’t need pity just empathy that anyone who is dealing with illness requires. Remember illness has no parameters for equality. It can strike anyone, Mental and physical health needs equal attention.

An irreparable loss to the Mental health sector and to the community at large, the passing of Mr. Keshav Desiraju has left a blank space that will be impossible to fill. His gentleness and empathy to everyone he met, his invaluable contributions to mental health, his presence itself, has left the world a better place to be in even after he is no more.
Yesterday we received a call from one of the residents of Aasha who had become upset when he came across an obituary of Mr. Desiraju in the newspaper. Mr. Desiraju had visited Aasha a few years ago, interacted with the residents, speaking with all of them, he visited the stores and saw service users busy at work there. He was genuinely interested in how they lived their lives and their well being. There were several more interactions with him over the years and his humility endeared him to all those who interacted with him. Mr. Keshav Desiraju was the Former Union Health Secretary, the grandson of former President of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and an IAS officer from the 1978 batch of the Uttarakhand Cadre.

75th Independence Day celebrations at AASHA home. 79yr old amma unfurled and hoisted the flag with the aid of a fellow resident. There was music, speeches, skits and belonging. After going through a difficult year with COVID and being isolated inside the home, this day felt like a freedom of sorts. All residents and staff are fully vaccinated. Ratna Chibber Tanya Dutt
