SPLEEN

According to traditional Acupuncture therapy, SPLEEN is an important organ related to the STOMACH internally and externally.

The main physiological functions of the SPLEEN are governing transportation and transformation, controling blood and dorminating the muscles.

• Governing transportation and transformation - Transportation implies transmission, Transformation implies digestion and absorption The SPLEEN has the function of absorbing essential substances (essential qi) from the food with a part of the fluid supplied and transmitting them to the HEART and LUNGS from where they are sent to nourish the whole body. Normal functioning of the SPLEEN is required for good appetite, normal digestion and absorption, good nourishment and normal transmission of fluids,

• SP 2 and SP 5 carry out this function.

• Controlling the blood - The SPLEEN has the function of keeping the blood circulating inside the vessels and preventing it from extravasating.

• SP 3 and SP 9 carry out this function.

• Dominating the muscles - Normal functioning of the SPLEEN in transportation and transformation enables the muscles to receive adequate nourishment from the food essentials and thus maintains muscle thickness and strength.

•SP 1 and LIV 3 carry out this function.

The SPLEEN and the mouth co-ordinate functionally in receiving, transporting and transforming food.

The Ql of the SPLEEN has the further function of holding and keeping the internal organs in their normal position,

Liver
According to Traditional Acupuncture Therapy, LIVER is the main important official organ of judgment It is situated in the right hypochondriac region, related externally and internally with the GALL BLADDER the official of ex*****on judged by the LIVER.

Its main physiological functions are storing blood, maintaining patency for the flow of QI, and controlling the tendons

1. Storing Blood - The LIVER possesses the function of storing blood and regulating the volume of circulation During rest, part of the blood remains in the LIVER, while during vigorous activity blood is released from LIVER to increase the volume of blood circulation to all organs at the required amount The LIVER, along with the HEART supplies the tissues and organs with blood and it influences menstruation as well.

• LIV 3 and LIV 8 carry out this function,

2. Maintaining Patency for the flow of qi(vital functions) means that the LIVER is responsible for harmonious and unobtructed functional activities of the human body, • The LIVER is related to emotional activities, especially depression and anger. Prolonged mental depression or a bit of anger may weaken the LIVER so that it is unable to promote the unrestrained and free flow of qi.

• LIV 1 and KD 3 carry out this function,

• The harmonious and free flowing functional activity of the LIVER promotes the functioningof the SPLEEN and STOMACH in digestion and absorption.

• LIV 2 and ST 45 carry out this functions

• The function of the LIVER also affects bile secretion, its storage in the GALL BLADDER and excretion into the intestines

• GB 34 and SP 1 carry out this function

3. Controlling the tendons - The Yin and blood of the LIVER nourish the tendons keeping them in a normal state of contraction and relaxation,

•LI 4 and SP 5 carry out this function

The LIVER opens into the eye. Each zang fu organ has a certain influence on the function of the eye. The LIVER stores blood and its channel directly communicates with the eye, than other zang fu organs

• TW 23 and UB 1 carry out this function.

The zang fu organs and five sense organs collectively form the structural and functional connections for all coordination

Heart

All religions say HEART is the ruler or Emperor of the world and so the Universe.

Located in the Thorax, HEART is internally and externally related to the SMALL INTESTINE the seperator of the pure and impure

The main physiological functions of the HEART are controlling blood and blood vessels, housing the mind.

1. Controlling the blood and vessels - Vessels are the site of blood containment and circulation, the impulse of the heart sending blood incessantly through the vessels to nourish the whole body. When blood supply is sufficient and blood circulation normal, the tissues and organs are well nourished and function properly.

• Liv 8 and SP 5 carry out this function.

2. Housing the mind - The HEART and HEART PROTECTOR(PERICARDIUM) are considered the main organs governing mental activities and generalising the physiological function of the brain. Spirit, consciousness, memory, thinking and sleep are all dominated by this function of the HEART.

•GB 38 and PC 9 carry out this function.

These two functions of the HEART have a mutual effect and correlation. According to Acupuncture theory: " The HEART dominates the vessels and the vessels supply the mind ".

The HEART opens into the tongue.

The two functions of the HEART, are closely related to colour, form, motility and sense of taste of the tongue. " Tongue is the mirror of the HEART "

The essence of the KIDNEY produces marrow that forms the BRAIN. The filling of the 'sea' of marrow depends on the essence of the KIDNEY.

It was also recognised as "The sense organs, the eyes, ears, nose and mouth, are in the head close to the BRAIN Owing to their highest and most obvious position, they perceive objects which will impress the BRAIN directly and remain in the BRAIN"

Scientific evidence suggests that thinking and memorisation are the main functions of the BRAIN.

Traditional Acupuncture theory says that the mental activity is dominated by various organs, the HEART being the main dominant.

The HEART PROTECTOR (PERICARDIUM) plays the main role in attachment and protecting the HEART.

Transforming Qi from HEART to BRAIN.

• PC S and PC 3
• TW 5 and TW 2.
• GB 38 and GB 43.

The above mentioned points carry out all functions of the BRAIN and the sense organs.

Kidney
Acupuncture theory and all Natural theory state KIDNEY and URINARY BLADDER form the WATER element of human body. Reproductive systems are also included with WATER element.
The KIDNEY located at the either side of the lumbar area is connected internally and externally with URINARY BLADDER and SEXUAL ORGANS
Its main Physiological functions are storing essential substances and dominating human reproduction, growth and development; producing marrow which collects in the head forming the brain, dominating the bones and manufacturing blood; dominating body fluid, and Receiving qi.
1. Storing essence and dominating reproduction, growth and development -the main essence of the KIDNEY is of two types congenital essence inherited from the parents and acquired essence transformed from the essential substances from the food. The vital essence of the KIDNEY greatly influences the process of birth, growth, full development and senility. • KD 5 and GB 20
2. Producing marrow, forming up the brain, dominating the bones and manufacturing blood ⁃ The KIDNEY stores essence which can produce marrow including spinal cord and bone marrow. The upper part of the Spinal cord connects with the BRAIN, while the bone marrow nourishes the bones and manufactures blood The supply to the BRAIN, the solidity of the bone, and the adequacy of the blood are therefore all closely related to the condition of the essence of the KIDNEY. •KD 3 and SP 5
3. Dominating WATER metabolism ⁃ The part of fluid sent down by the descending function of the LUNG reaches the KIDNEY. There it is divided into two parts, clear and turbid, The clear part(which is useful) is retained, and the turbid fluid (waste part) flows into the URINARY BLADDER to form urine to be excreted . KD 2 and TW 2
4. Receiving Ql- Respiration is accomplished mainly by the LUNGS, but the KIDNEY helps through its function of controlling reception of QI(AIR). The distribution of clean QI(AIR) inhaled by the LUNG to the whole body depends not only on the descending function of the LUNG but also on the KIDNEY'S function of reception and control.

Human Reproduction

Modern Science says, humans REPRODUCE sexually and the REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM in humans include formation of gametes(gametogenesis)

Then followed by insemination, fertilisation, implantation, gestation and parturition.

Traditional Acupuncture theory says, Languages, Culture, Humanness, Mortality, Longivity, Wisdom all are born from HUMAN REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM.

The circulation vital gi with the Metal qi created Languages.

The circulation vital qi with Wood qi create the culturee of the tropical zones derived from more than a thousand of generations.

The circulation qi with the Fire qi created Universal soul, with the body and mind of thetropical zones.

The circulation qi with the Earth qi created extended existence with Nature for the Wisdom of Longevity
Ecstacy is even created from the vital gi.

The two major organs involved in this Reproductive Cycle are KIDNEY and LIVER.

The central axis of our body the REN and DUO channel are the sole responsible creators of HUMAN REPRODUCTION.

Liv8, Liv 3, KD 10 and KD 7,

These command points play a major role in HUMAN REPRODUCTION.

The REN and DUO channel, both originate from the Reproductive organs.

REN channel regulates the functions of the Yin channels,

DUO channel has the function of regulating the qi and blood of the twelve organ channels

Acupuncture masters or experts on traditional hold recreate the above functions with deep wisdom.

ORGAN VERSUS CHANNEL

Ancient Acupuncture theories have the pattern identification according to the channels,

The organs and their relevant channels form an indivisible energetic unit; problems of the Internal Organs can affect the relevant channels and conversely, problems that start as channel problems can pe*****te into the interior and be transmitted to the organs.

In disease, there can be problems of the channels not affecting the organs and vice versa.

• The channels pertain to the Exterior of the body.
• Problems of the Internal Organs can affect the relevant channels
• Channel problems can pe*****te into the interior and be transmitted to the organs.

Acupuncture masters find the root cause on the pulse if the spirit qi or stomach qi is affected first, then start from pathological external treatment and so on.

The LCP of all channels help in this aspect.

• LU 7 and ST 40.
• TW 5 and PC 6.
• GB 37 and LIV 5,
• SP 4 and KD 4.
• UB 58 and SI 7.

Points of the upper extremities are combined with those of lower extremities for better results.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT AND FIRE

When used in a narrow sense the term 'HEAT' denotes a milder form of FIRE.

FIRE is more 'solid' than HEAT. It tends to move and dry out more than HEAT and this nature of FIRE causes dark scanty urine and dry stools.

The nature of FIRE is to

• Rise up to the Head.
• Dry fluids.
• Injure Blood and even Yin.
• Causes Bleeding.
• Affect the mind.

The main characteristic of FIRE is

• It blazes upwards.
• It is very drying.
• It damages Blood and Yin.
• It may cause bleeding.
• It has the potential to generate wind.
• It affects the Mind.
• It causes ulcers with sweling.

Acupuncture masters first diagonise if it is full fire or empty fire with this point TW 10 and then handle the fire and heat with water qi and earth qi.

ACCUMULATION POINTS

The Accumulation Points are all located between the fingers/toes and elbows/knees.

The term XI means 'crevices' and this refers to the fact that the ACCUMULATION POINTS are located in 'crevices where the channel gathers, and concentrates to plunge deeper from the superficial layers of the channel.

The accumulation points are
• Lu 6 and LI 7.
• SP 8 and ST 34.
• H 6 and SI 6
• KD 5 and UB 63
• P 4 and TW 7
• Liv 6 and GB 36.

These xi points are where the Qi of the channel gathers and are used mostly in acute patterns.

These points are like Go-down where there is always energy stock (gi-backup), taken and used to stop bleeding, pain and mostly for Yin channels.

Organ Clock Theory

The law of midday/midnight states that in each 24 hour period each official has a period of two hours when it is at its maximum energy.

This period is known as the HORARY time of the official.

This law is also referred as ORGAN CLOCK THEORY.

Each official also has a low period at the corresponding hours at the opposite time of the day, that is, 12 hours after the horary time

Treatment of the horary point also has the effect of clearing out debris from an official, so that the true state of its energy can be revealed.

• Lu - 3 am to 5 am.
• LI - 5 am to 7 am
• ST - 7 am to 9 am
• SP - 9 am to 11 am.
• HT - 11am to 1pm.
• SI - 1 pm to 3 pm.
• UB - 3 pm to 5 pm.
• KD - 5 pm to 7 pm.
• PC - 7 pm to 9 pm
• TW - 9 pm to 11 pm.
• GB - 11pm to 1am.
• Liv - 1am to 3 am

This organ clock theory reflects the hour by the sun, and has to be adjusted to reflect any seasonal changes when clock may be put forward or backwards.

Acupuncture masters advice patients according to this theory, to organise their life to help the body's natural function.

If they can open their bowels during the large intestine horary time 5am to 7am, then food entering the stomach between 7am to 9am during the stomach official time, will be digested better than food eaten at any other time and so on function of other organs sequencing.

Traditional Acupuncture masters have drawn upon a list of what are called internal and external cause of disease;

EXTERNAL CAUSATIVE FACTORS,

INTERNAL CAUSATIVE FACTORS.

• Diet / Lifestyle

It can be seen that five element acupuncture tends to work from inside outwards whilst other branches of acupuncture tend to work from outside inwards.

All, if based upon valid principles which chime with what we know of the human being, will be equally effective, meeting as it were in the middle, since both inside and outside have to be in harmony.

The distinction between all these categories must therefore always be blurred, but as broad categories they describe useful differences of emphasis.

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING POINTS

Acupuncture masters always remember that points are the servants of the elements.

The power they have is handed to them by the elements whose instructions they obey and whose energy they serve.

Isolated from the elements, they are powerless.

By far, the most important groups of points for five element acupuncturists are:

• Command points.
• Points used to clear blocks.

When point selection is concerned, we need always to remember that the aim of choosing any point is to enhance an element's balance.

The simplest way to do this is to choose points on the meridians of its two officials, or points on other meridians which relate specifically to its officials

• Sp 8 - a kind of excavator
• ST 24 - a kind of Lubricator.
•Lu 8-a kind of meridian gutter.
• K 24- aa kind of burial ground.
• UB 42- a kind of door to spirit.

Acupuncture masters have an understanding of the three jiao, to remember where each officials lie, the anatomical positions to relate with element points.

CHALLENGES OF FIVE ELEMENTS

The inter coordination of the five elements can be studied under a different title.

The FEARS of EACH ELEMENT.

• WOOD'S terror is that it will be denied growth, a bud forever closed.
•FIRE'S terror is that it might never know what LOVE is, its HEART eternally cold.
• EARTH'S terror is that it will be left unquickened, unable to bear fruit.
• METAL'S terror is that it is only ever a breath's - breadth away from death.
• WATER'S terror is that it will be hemmed in, unable to flow and drown in itself.

The CHALLENGES for each element at the moment of death:

• WOOD would like to say, "I gave the world more shape."
• FIRE would like to say, "I made the world the happiest place."
• EARTH would like to say, "I gave the world greater understanding."
• METAL would like to say, "I gave the world more meaning."WATER would like to say, "| survived".

TRAINING OUR SENSES

"Lose your minds and come to your senses" , we were always being told by our mentors.

The social veneer we all place around us has to some extent to be stripped away to allow us to develop our senses and be in direct contact with our own emotions.

This is by no means an easy task for any of us, It requires a form of reconnection with the purest, most profound part of ourselves, a truly wondrous experience for those brave enough to pass through what can be seen as a rite of initiation into our deepest selves.

The five elements as they express themselves in us we become aware of the same in each one of us.

As their characteristics become more familiar to us, we grow to perceive them clearly and develop ways of storing all the parcels of information we have gleaned, ready to be retrieved as we make our next diagnosis.

The four diagnostic indicators, if assessed appropriately, will offer us accurate information about the state of balance of a patient's energy.

Acupuncture masters are skilled very well, exercising them much as a tennis player exercises on the tennis court.

The changing colors on people's faces, changing smell on the body, changing sounds of the voices, may be sensitive enough to detect emotional changes.
