The pathogen genomes were reconstructed from ancient skeletons in Chile. (Oscar Eduardo Fontana-Silva/Anna Brizuela) A new study has found that leprosy was circulating in Chile some 4,000 years ago, meaning the disease arrived in the Americas much earlier than previously thought. That's based on an analysis of ancient bones and teeth by researchers from institutions in Germany, Argentina, and Chile, and it challenges…...

The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Profession (NCAHP), under the Union health ministry, has recommended to all state governments, Union Territories (UTs) and relevant institutions and universities to switch from usage of the term Paramedical to Allied and Healthcare, in order to ensure uniformity and standard terminology. Stores of glucose in the brain could play a much more significant role in the pathological degeneration of neurons than scientists realized, opening the way to new treatments for conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is a tauopathy; a condition characterized by harmful build-ups of tau proteins inside neurons. It's not clear, however, if these build-ups are a cause or a consequence of the disease....

Illustration showing how bacteria can absorb PFAS. (Peter Northrop/MRC Toxicology Unit) Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have the nickname 'forever chemicals' thanks to their persistence in the environment. While a handful of bacteria are known to mop up these insidious compounds, it's unclear whether any of our own microflora hide such a talent. A new study by an international team of researchers has shown how several species of human gut bacteria can absorb and store PFAS....

The smarter you are, the more your brain is in sync with its own secret rhythm, a new study has found. When your brain works particularly hard, different regions of the brain sync up as they work together to perform tasks that require a higher cognitive load. This is called theta connectivity, and a new study has found that not only is it highly flexible, adapting quickly to changing situations, but better brain coordination strongly correlates with cognitive ability....

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed an artificial metal-based nanozyme that can possibly be used to clamp down on abnormal blood clotting caused by conditions like pulmonary thromboembolism. Under normal circumstances, when a blood vessel is injured, specialised blood cells called platelets get activated and cluster together around the vessel to form protective blood clots. This process, known as the blood clotting cascade, involves a complex series of protein interactions triggered by signals from physiological chemicals such as collagen and thrombin....
