Day-9 for is Geometry, hosting along with and ._
I have not had a certain way of playing, as a kid. I have liked free-play always and it is something I like for my daughter too. When I thought of Games as a prompt, given that I am trying to interpret it through Art Deco in the city, I couldn't think of anything else but this lovely vintage play area that was a part of the Dasaprakash complex. It gives me all sorts of nostalgia, playing there, having their famous ice creams, and enjoying the dosas as a little girl with my parents.
Sadly, I did not have enough images of this part of the complex. But a lovely follower, Lynda O'Grady shared these loved details of the building. I can't thank her enough for the wonderful set of pictures that she had shared from back in 2004. The last image is from 2010 right before the complex was demolished..

Day-8 for is Geometry, hosting along with and ._

“French in origin, the Art Deco style represents the world’s first initial amalgamation of modern design movements. The style synthesised a number of dynamic influences that culminated in an exclusive fashion of high taste in Europe- primarily Paris during the first two decades of the 20th century. These included forces as disparate as the German Bauhaus, the Ballets Russes, Oriental and African Art, Egyptian, Aztec, Mayan and early Greek architecture, aerodynamism, zigzag geometry, moderne stream lining and visual expression of jazz music. Concurrently the Italian futurists and the French and the Spanish Cubists were graphically changing established perceptions of time and dimension while Hollywood was thrusting its signature glamour across the world’s movie screens. Expanded communications in the forms of radio, telephone and magazines along with broadened travel via the automobile, ocean- liner, locomotive, and airplane facilitated the spread in the awareness of Art Deco’s thrilling combination of romance, sophistication, rhythm and geometry.” - Author Navin Ramani
One of the primary design feature of Art Deco designs is Geometry and this was not restricted to just architecture. Geometry became the underlying criteria for any form of design in the Art Deco style. Geometrically stylised typography, graphic patterns and designs, elements that accentuated architecture and aesthetics characterised Art Deco design industries.
In the image are examples of a few Art Deco features from Madras Deco.

Day-7 of , hosting along with and ._ , prompt- Fly..
Did you know that this beautiful Art Deco Building was demolished a few years ago?
The Madras Flying Club, one of the oldest aviation academies in the country, was established in Madras in October 1929 as a private club, long before passenger traffic commenced at the city's airport.
It was established by a pilot named G. Vlasto and commenced on 19 November 1929 with a meeting at the Madras Guards Institute on Poonamallee High Road. In the meeting, the then Secretary of the Aero Club of India, addressed the gathering announcing the formation of a new flying club at Madras with the financial grant from the Director of Civil Aviation. The flying club was incorporated on 4 March 1930, and, with the subsidy for commencing flying programs granted in April 1930, the flying club was formally inaugurated on 20 August 1930 by Sir George Frederick Stanley, the then Governor of Madras, who was also the first patron of the flying club.
In October 1955, the flying club celebrated its silver jubilee, under the president-ship of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Day-6 for is Education, hosting along with and ._
The seeds for medical education in Madras were sown as early as 1797 by the East India Company. Medical Education formally started in the city with the establishment of Royapuram Medical School in June, 1903. This was housed in the Old Bullet Factory of the East India Company. On 19th December, 1913, Governor Pentlandite laid the foundation stone for the Royapuram Medical School. Following this, in March 1934, a 5 year Licensed Medical Practitioner course was inaugurated by the then Governor of Madras Presidency, Sit George Fredrick Stanley. The college, till then known as Royapuram Medical school was renamed Stanley Medical School in his honour. On July 2nd, 1938, the Stanley Medical School was upgraded as Stanley Medical College. Between 1937 and 1941, new specialised clinics, medical and surgical units were added. This 1940s Art Deco building, now the administration block of the college, is a great example of symmetry and symbolism used in Art Deco artchitecture.

Day-5 Development for with ._
When we say development, what are we referring to? Development and change are inevitable and our cities are a testament to that.
The first image clearly shows the various layers of development, not just architecturally, but as a city, in its urban fabric, it’s environment and so on.
Architecturally, the development from the Colonial ways to a modern city can be evidently seen in various parts of our city. But did you know that in this development, Art Deco played an major role? It was not just an architectural affair but a cultural shift, a phenomenon that was as international as it was, as Indian, tradition and swadeshi.. the 1930s saw a boom in this culture, it was used as a was to express the society’s support to the Swadeshi Movement. The establishment of homegrown businesses, institutions, recreational spaces, reinforced by Art Deco architecture, localised/ regionalised and was quiet immediately accepted by the people.
This was a Pan-Indian movement. It was this culture that paved way to Modern Indian cities ..
The image shows the Indo-saracenic Law college building, the Art Deco 1940s United India Building and the 1970s Kuralagam building and the recent Metro rail development, it show how development has been reinforced by architecture in the most effective way possible.
Swipe to see an archival image that shows the Parry building and it’s environs, an image that shows the kind of development that was happening in the city in the 1930s and 40s.

The prompt for Day-5 of was DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPMENT and heritage are two important lenses of an urban landscape. Heritage is faced with various forms of developmental pressures.
Through this prompt I wanted to bring out two things. One, the development of architectural styles and the shift from colonial to modern. Two, the layers of heritage and development that’s an integral part of the city.

Day-4 Community (READ THE CAPTION AND SWIPE FOR EXCLUSIVE IMAGES) for , hosting along with and ._
Community can be interpreted through various subjects. As a heritage professional, I strongly believe that communities play an important role in giving value and significance; aiding sustenance and regeneration of any piece of heritage. The current climate around development has often ignored the existence and importance of these communities and we can see great many examples for that pan-India.
Another interpretation (like in this case) is “a SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY “.
Here is an Art Deco gem, a hospital from 1938, that has always served its community, the people who are in dire need of treatments that are also economically accessible.
Set up by B.Ramarau, in 1938, Ramarau poly clinic was a hospital that had one of the earliest X-ray units in the city (see image). At a time when hospitals were either run by Britishers or missionaries, this was one of the few self financing establishments.
A candid conversation with the owner Dr. Mohan Rau was a great opportunity to experience the building and listen to him pride on how he has had the satisfaction to provide medical attention to people from smaller districts. There were instances when free medical service was also made available at this place.
Located on PH Road, under a great deal of developmental pressure, the future of establishments such as this is irresolute…
